Actually I haven't had a cadet yet, but I nearly had three of them last summer when, in an amazing combination of appalling manners and rank stupidity, the coach of three dutch cadet sailors led his charges through the downwind leg of the Cherub/Moth Nationals. We had to gybe off in a tactically unfavorable place in order to miss the poor kids, which is not what you want in a very tight last race with series placings hanging on every position...

While tempting there are three considerations:-
1) as they were not out to race IRPCS apply and under those they definitely had right of way
2) disentangling bits of cadet from round your bowsprit is not a race winning manouver
3) You win't get redress if you're messed up by a boat that isn't racing if it had right of way under IRPCS.

I'll always remember my first Mirror. It crossed my path whilst I was racing a board on Coniston. I lept off the board to lessen the blow but this just propelled the thing forward faster. It entered the hull just in front of the mast and managed to emerge in the cockpit by breaking through the front bulkhead. I have never seen a board so thoroughly impalled in a boat. My board was undamaged although I lost a couple of places getting it out of the Mirror before I could continue!

at a club i used to race at, there were two cadets-it must be part of the 'done thing' when you sail one to get in everyones way, because thats all they did, everyone hated them and used to swear (not me though! ) at them while they past by!

At my old club anyone under 18 was a cadet - which gives the phrase 'You never forget your first cadet' slightly suspect connotations.

Lol ok matt that could be seen as slightly suspect, but the phrase was refering to the boats. We now have a new boat at our club that has you'll never forget your first cadet across the whole length of it.
