I have a silva compass mounted in the front bulkhead of my contender.  Out for a sail yesterday and I notice it is lurching about drunkenly inside its casing - the whole ball bit seems to be out of kilter.  How has this happened?  More importantly, can it be fixed or is it hopeless?

the same, but different...

If it's not too old Silva are very good at replacing bust compasses.
I only found that out after repairing mine with the same fault you have.
If the compass is the big ball type like mine the ball is glued to the front of the casing. So to repair it:-
1 cut a big hole in the top of the casing to give access.
2 put some araldite around the rim of the casing and on the ball where it meets up with the casing
3 before glue hardens reset the ball in position and force a few bits of firm flexible foam into the gap between the ball and the case to keep everything in position.
I did this a few years ago and it is still stuck. It doesn't matter if water gets into the casing.

4 before glue
