Vincent Riou on PRB in the Vendee Globe has been awarded redress for his rescue of Jean Le Cam.

For those of you that have not been following this Jean le Cam lost the bulb of his keel and capsized off of Cape Horn. At the time he was 3rd and PRB was 4th.

PRB stopped racing immediately and went to help his fellow competitor. During the rescue Riou damaged his rig and was subsequently dismasted through no fault of his own.

Should Riou be awarded his position in the race as his overall position. This would assume that he is currently 3rd (Jean le Cam now being out of the race whatever) and will remain so as long as the boats who were ahead finish the race. If they don't he could potentially win the race without crossing the finish line.

You got to feel for him. Stopping a lifelong dream to help only to break your boat. That would really hurt.

I think he should be given his position at the time but allowed to stop mend his boat and then restart. Then give him a cumulative time and overall position. I appreciate he will not be in the same weather systems as the rest but at least this means he would sail the same distance.

I certainly don't see it as fair to the other competitors if he is given his position now as Contender 443 has said if the front two drop out this would give him the win. Not a fair or reasonable solution.

well he has already won the race, but thats an aside

my personal view is he will retire and be a gentleman sailor, plus his rescue attempt got him alot of press that coming say 3rd in the race would not have achieved

The problem with that is his mast is at the bottom of the ocean and he has no way of getting another one.

I am sure he will be awarded something like the "Legion d'honour" (sorry BNS you know the quality of my french)
