I wasn't really sure where to post this, as there is no 'What Club' section on the forum, but anyway, here we go...

In the new year I shall be leaving my current boat building job in the midlands miles from the coast and moving south to start a non marine related job by the sea (ironic isn't it!) I have not been a member of a sailing club for the past 2 years as I have been able to keep my fleet of boats in the work yard and so haven't needed to pay to store them at a club and simply used them for doing open meetings. Next year, I will need somewhere to keep the boat and also do some sailing as it seems a shame to drive away from the devonshire coast to go sailing every other weekend.

Where do people think are good clubs in Devon? I will be living in Kingsbridge, at the top of the Salcombe Estuary, but don't suggest for a minute that I fancy sailing the Cherub in those conditions! I will be working in Paignton which is obviously renowned for its sailing. I would like other Asymetrics to sail against, have cheap membership and a good piece of water... not too much to ask surely?! What are peoples views on the following clubs... Paignton, Babbacombe or any other clubs in the Torbay, or clubs over Plymouth way. I know Starcross has a few B14's but i think that may be too far to travel.

Let me hear your views! I thank you all and wait in anticipation

I have a cousin that sails at Babacombe Corinthian - He reckons it's a good fleet (but then he is a furball lover so has no common sense) and has a good social side

A few mates of mine have sailed at all three clubs Paignton, Babbacombe & Royal Torbay YC and have always recomend them all to me when in the area. I have only sailed at RTYC and it is superb. Lots of Asymetrics during Torbay week.

Alternatively if you don't want to club race but want to just sail and blast around then you can pay about £50-£70 a year harbour dues and stick your boat on the beach at Hope Cove and blast around Bigbury Bay. At 10 minutes drive from you at Kingsbridge it is the only place near you that is not estuary sailing.

Good winds and flat water make for good sailing

Sailing in Bigbury Bay

The Harbour beech used by fishing boats and leisure craft

Landing on the beach at Hope Cove.

Am I jealous???

Ah yes, I know Hope Cove well. Lovely little pub there! Not sure I like the idea of sailing with no rescue cover in the Cherub!

As far as I know Paignton SC don't do asymetirc courses where as Royal Torbay definately do... BUT Torbays dinghy turn out is pretty shocking at the moment so you will probably get better numbers at Paignton.

The other advantage of Torbay over Babbacombe and Paignton is that it is the only one where you can launch in all conditions... BUT you might have huge issues getting a boat space there.

Not sure it is...  I think Hope Cove is served by Salcombe.

Surely the answer to your problems is to sell the Cherub and buy a Yawl...

When you see the list of call outs each year posted in the pub you really do realise how much the boat is needed.

As you already have a bowsprit, all you need is to make a detatchable mizzen . Then you can sail as a yawl in Salcombe and a cherub elsewhere.

We've been down this thread before really. Assuming you're one of of the Noyce's Noyces you'll know all the distances but I wouldnt have thought it would take any longer to drive to Starcross [where they have boats to sail against ,but no water] or Plymouth [where they have water but no boats] than Torbay, especially in the summer when its wall to wall tourists

Ahh. ..  you meant the Coastguard lifeboat... I thought you meant a Lifeboat lifeboat (which I think there used to be one at Hope Cove many years ago?)

This should surely be in the Pimp My Boat section?!

If you are talking about the Garden centre then no, not related. Just coincidence! Although I have eyed up pinching those gates for when I get a house with a drive

Hi Tim,

I grew up in Torbay, and have sailed at quite a few of the clubs down there.  As with all things on the forum - I would definitely recommend trying all the clubs in the area.  They all have their own pros and cons in terms of facilities, quality of racing, turnouts and atmosphere etc...

You are correct on turnouts at RTYC which have been down since the slipways down there were diagnosed with concrete cancer.  However theres now a new slipway in place and some boat parking capacity which I understand is currenty being increased.  The dinghies are mostly asymetrics and the club house is fantastic.

Re turnouts - having been around the country are there many dinghy clubs where turnouts arent ever an issue?  (I'm going to hide now....)

Babbacombe - great little club, very picturesque, fantastic atmosphere although as said it can be difficult to launch/retrieve there in an Easterly.  Good Tasar fleet there that will give you a run for your money.

Paignton - very competitive, great courses for double handed boats but I dont think they tend to get too many asymetrics....

Brixham - great club but unfortunately not a massive dinghy section.

Other option is just round the corner at Teign on the river, great little club, very friendly and some great racing....however it tends to be better for singlehanders rather than big kite machines....Great winter series also - which I'd definitely recommend.

Torbay week is great, lots of different dinghies, good racing and fantastic socials each evening.  Would definitely recommend.

Re: Starcross

Water issue is not too big a problem as long as you can be flexible about what times  you can sail on Sunday's - even for boat's with daggerboards - though you do need to study the sand banks at low water.  There is a very active racing programme with turnouts averaging well over 40 and normally around 60 during summer.

Recent race results http://www.starcrossyc.org.uk/RaceManager/Results/Autumn11-CS-20081207-109-0.htm - HERE to  give you an idea of current turnouts.

When I moved to Devon it was definitely the most competitive racing I could find.

Thanks for all the advice, and I appreciate all the time and effort gone in to the PM's i've received. I've got sketchy internet access for the time being as have already started the big move!
