No, they beat the yanks, who had had (surely) the longest winning streak in international sport.

I don't remember this, however, as I reckon I was cheerfully c****ing and p***ing myself at the time, what with being three and a half months old.

It does fugit faster with every year. My younger daughter's teacher was born in 1983. She surely wouldn't remember the America's Cup either.

I remember this - it was really exciting - even more exciting than my graduation which happened in the same year and a welcome relief from all the spring time swotting for finals.  I wasn't even a real sailor at the time either, more a trolley dolly.

Born to Win remains one of my favourite sailing stories too.

I remember watching it in someones house - well not watching it exactly. There was a very fuzzy picture and it was about a 30 second clip on Channel 4.

Oh those were the days when you were lucky to get 4 channels on your TV
