Good work guys...

It's going to be a gripping medal race as virtually anyone could win it or lose it..if they do win it then whose going to volunteer to lift their boat out of the water with them in it when they return to the dock!!

Perhaps team GBR could become the victim of a "sail down the fleet"....

Supposed to be a return to Sunday's wind.

Let's hope they manage to show the tornado's and stars off well. e good to have some good quality racing as a finale

I doubt it with the match racing expertise of Iain Percy at the helm.......

Unlikely, with so many teams in with a chance.

That only works if the series #1 has enough points cushion not to be threatened by #3 which isn't the case here.

Ok then I've had to get a pen and paper out for this

IF Swe finish 7 or better they are assured of at least a silver

if GBR finish 6 or better they are assured of at least a silver

BRA must finish 3 or better for any chance of gold 4 or better for silver.  for every place below 1st then SWE and GBR can add one place to above scores.

If SWE and GBR finish 7 and 6 or better respectively then who ever comes in ahead wins Gold.  for every place that BRA are behind 1 obviously add 1.

so for example if GBR finish first BRA can't win gold (goes to GBRas  Ahead of SWE) but if BRA were second then SWE would need to be 8 or better for silver!

Confused.....I can't wait to see the commentators trying to describe this.  Oh and I have paid no attention to the boats who may be able to screw the BRA over.

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

My comments still stand;

If I was SWE I would be sticking like glue to GBR, but keeping a close eye on where BRA are.

IF BRA are down the pan, then SWE atacks GBR, if not then SWE needs to sail fast; IF GBR get away then SWE may have problems if BRA are in "Contention".

I think it depends on the wind.  If its light and fluky, SWE will stay closeish to GBR, but not bang a corner if GBR choose to; IF BRA sail a blinder and disappear then SWE might go back to bury GBR.  Will be interesting to watch.  I agree there is no clear cut plan for SWE unless they just go for speed.  GBR (IMO) will just try and sail away and keep clean.

IF there is some wind, it could get very interesting!!!!

Decent wind. And Ainslie in the commentary box- though sadly, with Simmonds...
Advantage SWE at the moment

For big heavy old boats with no spinnakers, they're fair motoring down the offwind leg. VERY close.

Advantage over SWE, but BRA might get through to Gold!

One of the problems with the graphics they show is a total lack of scale- by the graphics, the boats are about 0.5m long. When the distances are so small, boat length is important. ARGH. BACK TO THE SAILING. LEAVE ROB AND SHIRLEY FOR POST RACE!

Super result. 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze. That's over half the medals available.

Well done to the whole team.

Familiar scenes for Robert coming up. Standing on the second step wearing a silver medal while the British national anthem plays.

Ben Ainslie's commentary was superb, really helpful and insightful. He picked up on the details that Shirley and Richard have been missing all week. When he finally made the call at the end and said, "They're going to do it", I didn't doubt it for a second.

Missed all the post-race stuff (had to leave for work), who followed up Bryony Shaw by swearing like a true sailor?

I believe it was Iain. Radio five played the interview but bleeped out the F word. Iain then commented that sailing wasn't just for posh boys...!!

Did anyone else catch Ben's comment during the tornado race. Along the lines of "the Germans are in the pi#s!!

Fantastic results
But I think you need to check your maths - Perhaps you meant we got a medal in over half of the events (not quite the same thing).

As each county only has 1 competitor in each event GBR could only win 11 medals and we got 6. That's what I was getting at.

It is the same thing in sailing with one competitor per nation - as a country you can only get a maximum of 11 medals, so getting 6 is fantastic.

Looks like GBR were doing some sailing down the fleet.

Good work guys.

No it is not the same thing!  But this is a Sailing forum not a Statistics forum so lets just agree that it is a fantastic set of results.

Either way, I really enjoyed the Star medal race and well done Team GBR.

That Star race was awesome.  As a skiff sailor I MUCH preferred watching that to that 49er medal race fiasco.

They look so complicated to sail, that rig and jib system is just bizarre!

Could someone explain how the jib/whisker pole system works? It looks like they loosen the foot of the jib about a foot and let it fly up like a spinnaker

The mast is raked forward going down wind, this (amongst other things) loosens the jib luff making the jib fuller.

Also it seems that the jib works better downwind when raised about a foot

A few reasons for lifting the jib up on the run

1) It stops it flopping around when the hounds go forward several feet on th erun
2) It lifts the jib up into the stronger breeze aloft
3) If the boat rolls [and they can be really rolly with the kicker off downwind] the pole end can easily end up in the water during a roll to windward. If this happens it can push the already inverted mast beyound the limit and break it. The pole is around 9' long BTW. Having the jib and hence pole higher can give the skipper a wider margin of error before disater strikes.

It used to be that the jib was just lifted until the clew ring hit the pin on the forestay connector, some 16" up from the deck, but many boats are now using forestays that connect under the deck and allow the jib to go up to any height.

A very tense and exciting race, but it looks like Iain and Andrew's winning move was made at the windward mark, they were behind up the beat and then just after the windward mark they were in front of the swedes. So WHY did they cut away at that point to Rob and Shirley talking about how wet and windy it is???

I can see it's wet and windy, show me the race!
