Anyone else bored with all the hype over the supposed greatest Olympic athlete ever?

Perhaps each race of the sailing event should have medals.

When Phelps has won Gold at 5 Olympics in a row like Redgrave then he will be the greatest.

Hhe's clearly the best swimmer of all time but they have too many medal opportunities.

here here..

There's masses of incongruities between sports in the olympics - just imagine if we could have both perce and ben racing both the finns and the stars, but no doubt the 100m mens sprint final will have loads of seppos in it...

Then on sunday I was listening to Amir Khan on the radio talking about he wasn't allowed to compete as he'd turned professional, and later on that day I'm sure I watched an Olympic tennis match between Federer and Hewett..and isn't that bloke Ronaldinho kicking the football for brazil?

The Boxing anomoly is due to their many World governing bodies- there's an Amateur one, and at least three Proffesional ones. With the whole games being nominally amatuer, it's the amatuer governing body that rules, and you can only go the one-way between the two. There's eleven events, for men only

For other sports, there's just a single unified governing body, allowing pros, amateurs and those in the grey area between to compete. Remember, football and tennis aren't the only sports where this is the case- what's Ben Ainslie's job again?

They've just been talking about the paucity of events in the track cycling- they've got seven events for men, and three for women. Further, for those seven mens events, which are a mix of individual and team sprint and endurance races, they're allowed a maximum of eleven riders. So it's not just sailing that's rather limited in numbers.

There are fifteen Weightlifting events

There are fifteen shooting events. That's a sport where the competitors can be fat blokes wearing jeans.

Do not try and comprehend the whys and wherefores of Olympic events. It makes little sense.

I was a little bored at first with Phelps, but now as he is getting closer and winning the races so emphatically I just want him to do it

So glad the USA are not having it all their own way though

Yes I agree Contender 541, I really want to see phelps do well now, he doesn't come across as an arrogant whatsit either so thats always a winner in my opinion!

He now has his eight, and congratulations to him because he is obviously a very good swimmer, however, maybe now we won't have to sit through a 15 minute feature on his progress every night.

Yep, fantastic result. The greatest swimmer.

All he has do do now is win gold at the next 4 games and he can be considered the greatest Olympic ever.

Until then I still say Sir Steve is the man ...

Or Emil Zatopek (excuse the spelling) who won 5000m, 10000m and marathon in one games. Rather more effort required than a quick blast up and down the pool.
