12 or so second lead round mark 3. Final downwind leg now.

The wind might be rubbish, but the ten minutes I've now watched, the coverage is rather good.

Looks like he's down to third or fourth- the horror of being able to do so little when micro-puffs come through, even when you're top of the game.

Talking now about the tide affecting the sailors - not great

It looks dire doesn't it.

Huge tide and no wind - Ben's dropped right back on the final leg...

It would appear that Ainslie is not out of the lead group - Greece leading

Greeks won the race, Ben Ainslie has finished ninth - make that tenth. He lead by 100 metres at the windward mark but a shift and drop in wind half way down the final run let through 9 other sailors.

Qingdao is going to form!

And the result is..... I think

Greece

USA

Poland

India

France

Croatia

Brazil

GBR - 9th ish

Gutting. That can't be fun. Well done to the Greek guy though. And most of the top seeds well down the rankings too.

The long lens cameras do foreshorten things horrilbly

Who's the guy in commentary box with Shirley?

Sounds like good news from the Yngling course though- from 11th at the final windward mark to 2nd at the finish!

Date Posted: 09 Aug 08 at 7:47am

Richard Simmonds is doing the commentary with Shirley.

Sounds like the Yngling girls have fought back to second after being last at the first mark!

Don't know who the King Edward is (commentator), but just said that GBR is 2nd in the Yngling after been dead last at the previous mark

I thought the two classes were supposed to be on seperate race areas? The fleets just sailed through each other...

Dutch have opened up a HUGE lead, but can they make it stick?

Stern cams make me a bit queasy

Looks like a replay of the last Olympics; a poor start for Ben but it just fired him up and look what happened

hehe. Not exactly high-octane excitement, is it?

Wind is a mess, but it is the same wind for all - so work with it

Very impressed with the speed of the spinnaker lifts and drops in the Yngling races

Ainslie leading race 2

The Dutch Yngling team have never sailed together before this event - and they are leading race 2 by minutes

They've not sailed together in actual competion, but they had many imes during the training/selection process. An interesting experiment in putting together a team- they used three boats, three bow, three middle and three helms, and chopped and changed repeatedly.

I never said it was wonderful, I just said I thought they'd get to race. But race two didn't look too bad.

Is it all on the water judges? There seem plenty of congestion around the marks with the Ynglings - what was the USA doing with the kite up dodging the boats still coming up the beat - didn't seem to do them much harm though.

-------------
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Yes, the USA Yngling looked as if it had got in the way of several boats as it gybed onto port and started the run. But the commentators didn't seem to notice any of that!

I saw at least two other boats doing turns in that race: I'd be suprised if they'd have got away with anything significant. Telephoto foreshortening?

By the way, if you go on the ISAF site you can find out what the On-the-water Jury busied themselves with today.  http://www.sailing.org/olympics/racing/onwater.php - http://www.sailing.org/olympics/racing/onwater.php

Looks like several Finns got caught for pumping. The Greek Finn that won the 1st race seems to have had to do turns - and then what happened in the 2nd race?

A second infraction of rule 42 in the regatta (and third and so on) requires the sailor to retire from the race. Failure to retire leads to a non-discardable DSQ.
For third offences and so on sailors are required to retire and will be given a non-discardable DSQ. Failure to retire will result in an early plane home.
It's all in addendum P of the sailing instructions.

I wonder how much pressure has been put on the Race Officers to start races, after all the Chinese would have looked pretty silly if not alot of races happened?

I'm not sure I'd have strated a couple of them if I were on the Comittee boat.

thoughts?

-------------
I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!
