Sailors go for gold on the BBC
There is no need to miss a second of Britain’s sailors’ quest for gold
in Qingdao next month as the BBC brings you round-the-clock coverage
from all the action on the water at Beijing 2008.
With full race coverage set to start at 6am – the time of the first
scheduled warning signal in China – every day on the BBC Interactive
‘Red Button’ service and at least 30 minutes of sailing highlights
planned on BBC One every morning, you can watch all the excitement
unfold as it happens in Qingdao.
Viewers will be guided through the thrills and spills of the
Olympic sailing competition by experienced sailing commentator Richard
Simmonds joined by double Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson, who
will provide expert analysis and insight into the sport.
All the interactive coverage will be repeated each evening while an
hour-long daily Olympic highlights show will also be tracking Britain’s
progress around the sports on BBC One at 7pm.
Meanwhile, on Monday 19 August – the day of the scheduled 470 medal
races – BBC 5Live will be broadcasting their Breakfast Programme live
from the Olympic Sailing Venue while BBC Radio’s Juliette Ferrington
will be based in Qingdao for the duration of the Games.
Around 300 hours of Olympic drama will be broadcast on BBC One and
Two over the course of the Games while BBC Interactive air time will be
upped from 1,000 hours of coverage at the Athens Olympics to 2,450
hours in China.
The Olympic Sailing Regatta takes place from Saturday 9 August – Thursday 21 August.
All broadcast and event schedules are subject to change.

Hmm sailing on the radio, now that's going to be dull!
"Yes, GBR have tacked on a wave, slowing, back up to speed. They are
really flying now, must be doing at least 10 knots upwind there, I can
see the determination on their faces from here. Over a wave, and
another, now that's a big one. If you could just see the action here,
you would be on the edge of your seat"
Maybe it will work, who knows! One thing I do know is that I'm not
getting up at 6am to watch sailing, waking up time is 0820 for me!

I have decided I am not getting up at 6 to watch the sailing, and I understand that you can record tele with the Sky box? If this is possible could someone please explain to me how to do it? I'm only used to 4 channels, but now we have a sky box thing and there are lots more! I think I want to record the whole race if possible, will that fit in the box?
Any help would be great! Thanks.

Tom - I think that the coverage will be available on the BBC iplayer thingy on the net during and afterwards (but I may well be wrong....)

Some thoughts so far.....
It seems as if the Chinese TV coverage is picking a fleet a day and there is no other coverage of the other fleets - or am I missing something (today 49ers but no Finn or Yngling coverage)?
The light winds and at times weird coverage - (have any of the film crew or directors ever seen a dinghy race before?) is not doing our sport any great favours.
http://www.sailing.org/olympics is a fantastic source of info.
There appear to be a number of incidents on the water not backed by umpire or protest - exactly like normal sailing!
Fo those of us who do go dinghy sailing it is just great have whole dinghy races on TV (Sky + red button) - not sure what the general sports enthusiast would make of the "action" so far.
I can't believe I booked a whole weeks holiday (last year) with no TV or internet connection for the 2nd week - ARGGGGGGGHHHHHH!

I agree with timeintheboat, it's definately the case that they 'choose to follow one race only' - today for example the RSX second race appears to have been postponed - but they then didn't have the flexibility to cut across to the finns or the 49ers which were still racing - shame..
Also I think there's a couple of bits missing from the coverage...
a) On the 'wide' upwind shots - i.e. featuring 10/15 boats then some graphics of letters designating GBR, NZ, ESP etc would be great (I guress technically tough as well)
b) Action replays - I would have loved to see some of the 49er incidients in a little more detail..
Also there's doesn't appear to be a commentator on the pier calling the racing for the spectators on the shore which is a real shame, hopefully they put that right for the medal race.

Whatever is sailing on Course area A is that which is being covered by the TV. Hence all the medal races are on Course A. Lasers tomorrow.

Makes sense- Course A is the one close to the shore, and I'm sure some of the camera shots seem to be long lens stuff from the hard.
