Hi everybody,

You guys are pretty switched on to things like this so, what should I use to get some scratches out of the bottom of my 600?

They aren't very big, just from the trailer and small trapeze hook scratches. I'm not sure if it would make any difference to what I would use but its yellow!!

Adam

Have you tried serious polishing with an appropriate cutting compound for starters? If they're deeper than tat a bit of sanding might be in order.. Followed by all the polishing...

Well if you get some wet and dry, you can have a go at it with that depending on how aggressive they are. You can polish the hull up to shiney from 800 grit but it is easier if you wet and dry to 1200 first. If the scratches are deep then you will want to fill them first. Plastic Padding gelcoat is probably the easiest for small applications but you won't get a colour match. In this case, smooth is fast so don't worry too much.

i would go to wet and  dry 1200 then 1500 if you can get it (with lots of water). after that i do a t-cut followed by a second t-cut but with almost no pressure. follow that with a wax based polish (the pink stuff e.g muc of miricle shine)

i wouldnt wax a hull!!  Unless its a teflon based product, car wax stuff increases surface tension with the water.

Funny how the polish question devides people! I tend to use Mer caravan polish or the stuff Northampton sailboats sell, and have never noticed the boat going slower afterwards (in the wrong direction, yes, but that can't be blamed on the polish!).

thats why after i applying wax to my boat i get more beading of the water droplets. however, i wax it in order to get a nice shine and make the boat look nice and in order to protect it. it also means when it gets t-cut the max is what is removed in order to be replaced with new, shiny wax

but for outright speed just sand with the smoothest wet and dry you can find. it just looks dull afterwards.......... that said, hitting one wave wrong in a race will make more difference..... entirely up to you

Waxing the hull with something like autoglym will help to prolong the life of the gelcoat, and preserve the colour too. Not so important on a white/grey boat, but on coloured hulls it makes a difference.

I guess that if you are going to use a wax polish on a custard coloured boat, you might as well check out the range of coloured ones available.........I thought that I'd be helpful and find out if Turtlewax do a yellow (don't think that they do, but I'm sure that I've seen something similar in Halfords) however I found that they've recently launched a range of Marine cleaners/polishes on their website - http://www.turtlewaxuk.com/results.asp?txtrange=Marine%20Line - Clicky

Cheers,

Nigel

Hi Adam,

I only T-cut my hull after sanding the repairs down with 1200 grit wet and dry. gets it nice and shiny. To be honest polishing and stuff will make minute differences, and tactical decisions or bad tacks will make far more difference on the 600. If you are going to lymington I will look out for you, a yellow boat wont be too hard to spot. I've got purple progrip on the side decks, come and say Hi.

Kinda along the same lines ... Whats best for bringing a dirty hull back up to colour again?  (tyre marks from jettys, slightly off color gelcoat in areas from silly people strimming around my boat, and splattering the hull with chopped grass etc etc)

White gelcoat boat, tried Muc Off .... Didn't really have much effect. I'm not really after one of those superfast/"nano" coatings ... Just something that I can look at and think .. " oooh ... shiiiiiiiiny ... "

Looking back through the thread, looks like Autoglym or a wax (turtlewax?) would do the trick ... But just looking for a few pointers before I go spending money!

I can't get to any of the 600 events apart from the ones on the south coast.

i do intend to do the lee one, probably sail along from hill head for it and get parents to bring my launching trolley on the car.

Lymington is now looking doubtful though because i snapped the U bolt that holds the kicker to the hull (yes snapped, thats a 6mm piece of stainless steel snapped clean off) after last nights evening race. im going to get a holesaw to cut a hatch to fix it tommorow, the sika-flex should just about have time to dry by the time i get to lymington! and im just heading to LDC to get a new bolt now.
