Does anyone know of any good (preferably free) downloadable video editing software? Want to put together a promo video and overlay some sound etc etc, fairly straight forward and basic just need the right software. Experiences and advice more than welcome.

Windows movie maker?

If its an XP / Vista pc, you'll have it already.

Doesnt hurt to give it a go I suppose.

I use Sony Vegas which is the dogs wotsits but it's about 90 quid. In my opinion worth the money considering it capabilities compared to Windows movie maker.

Id echo whats been said... Sony vegas is the mutts nuts if your paying for it, but windows movie maker is free (in the entirely legal sense of the word) comes installed on most windows systems and is pretty intuative to use

Magic Bullet (what Top Gear is made with) is amazing too, the plugins are
great for Adobe Premier and other movie programs. Expensive though. But
good!

No need to, you have a perfectly "good enough for many things" solution in Windows Movie Maker. You may need XP SP2, but these things are readily available.

Once you have used WMM, you may find you need something more, with more bells and whistles. At that stage you will know what you want, and will be able to find it at a price.

Yeah, Movie Maker is sometimes ok. On the other hand it sometimes can't find the right codec and/or just cr*ps itself for no apparanet reason and crashes. Mind you, that's on Vista, which is asking for trouble in the first place.....
