bad news: doc says my knees wont take anymore hardcore dinghy sailing without serious permanent damage!
good news: for anyone that wants to buy the micro skiff!
obviously im gutted about this situation as i havent yet had it out on the water! but as it stands im struggling to walk at the moment. so skiffing is not an option.
pm me for details.

Sorry to hear your knees are not well. Who said sailing was a healthy pastime? Is there any other sport you can do? Windsurfing perhaps?
Shame about the boat but if you drop a subtle hint to Contender443, he might buy it for me!!

I know exactly what your going through. Thought I was going to have to sell the Laser, fortunately an operation has helped, but I suspect time is running out.

cheers for the kind words. already had the operation to try and sort it but they just wont take the abuse of hiking and trapezing. i will still be sailing yachts, but very gutted about no more trapezing! hiking i can live without.
nudge Contender443 this way and i'll try my best to get him to buy it for you BNS!

A real shame . Have you considered boats like the Challenger Trimaran? No hiking or trapezing involved, just sitting down in your comfy chair

think sticking to the projection for now will be fine. get to sit back and relax on the helm, have other people to do the work, cant get easier than that

I've never found trapezing hard on my knees. I've always preferred to use copious amounts of adjustment on trap. wire length rather than use a bent-legged position for any length of time. Just curious as to why trapezing causes you more issues than general standing up/walking about duties (or maybe it doesn't), or whether it's down to the type of boat and technique used/required.

It does surprise me that the doc ruled out trapezing, the force on your knees i tiny since it is the wire rather than you body taking the force. oing kick step to gunwale constantly in light winds might be hard on you knees over a long race though.
Is this now the second owner in a row with this crazy skiff who hasn't even had it on the water? Someone buy it, sail the thing and post pics dammit!

isnt the micro skiff 12ft long?? If so i wonder how much bimbling would be needed to make it measure as a cherub?? obviously it would need to be converted to twin wire ????

Why dont you get a cat - very kind to the knees.
The micro skiff wouldnt measure as a cherub, but could be a VERY overweight and wide 12ft skiff or R class!
Next owner to buy it - sail it! Its a nice little toy. So stable and easy to use, but personally id say buy a 700 or musto instead. But if you want a play thing for £800 you can do alot worse!

Cherubs have lots of rules, snout, chines etc etc it just wouldnt measure.
I didnt weigh it, but i did try and pick it up when it was along side Aqua in the garage, picked up aqua - yup no probs, picked up the micro and nearly put my back out!! At a guess, 70kg ish hull weight.............. and it feels it when sailing. But like I said for a toy its a goodeon, to race id say a 700 or musto as they are just so smooth and responsive.

having sailed trapeze boats since i was 10, from conteders and 49ers laser2's 505 fireballs nat 18s hobie tigers etc etc, ive pretty much sailed all types of trapeze boat. the loads when in transitional phase can be huge, plus im not a small guy. wire to wire can also create huge impact forces. general walking does hurt very much so, hence why the doc said to stop the high impact stuff. also the action of over bending the knees is what can cause alot of problems i suffer from.
i am very gutted that i wont get to sail it as it was just going to be a play thing. but id rather be able to walk when im older, which is why im no longer doing any dinghy stuff.
pm me with sensible offers

Don't give up hope Slop_Idol. I have bad knees, and had several operations on them, and was told to give up sailing or not walk at 40. Well, I did give up when I was 27 for 12 years and started sailing again (GP's initially, but Merlins now) about three years ago. So far so good!!

What about taking up helming a single wire two man boat- the helms in those tend not to do much hiking, given that it tends to make little difference compared to the crew's trapezeing
|
Posted By: Oli
Date Posted: 13 May 08 at 5:24pm
the only dinghy i would sail that has the crew hiking is the nat 18 and you do really have to hike those. i wont take dinghy sailing off the menu completely, but i will be picking and choosing what i do and when very carefully.

Talk to some people at the Blackwater Club like the Hare twins or Gareth
Davies or Neil McCulloch. Im sure theres someone there that is crazy
enough to buy it. Its a shame you cant sail it though.

Right time to ditch the Laser then.
I had a knee injury years ago and I am sure the time will come to move over to a trapeeze boat before long.
Hope all is well, for the yachtie stuff.

Maybe a challenger would be a tad too tame but the Weta 4.4 trimaran was getting the sailing anarchists all hot and moist a few weeks back....

WETA?!?!?!?!?
I've sailed one and i expected it to be really really really bad.......
i was pleasantly surprised......... it was just really bad
I dont think i would ever buy one, it just felt like it was stalling all the time. The only plus sides i found was that the racks were carbon and the Gaastra sails looked awesome!
But still.......I wouldn't have one!!

Please someone buy this "microskiff" who is actually going to sail it? Seems the last 3 or so owners just never got it wet!

The UK distributor for the Weta brought the demo boat to Alton Water last weekend, I had a go and was surprised how much fun it was - much lighter and more nimble than I'd expected. We sailed it two-up but all the controls are well positioned for solo sailing. It certainly is 'a bit different' but definitely a good laugh and very comfortable.
