Different clubs get people to start doing it at different ages, its all up to the club. I hate doing it cos I dont get to sail that day! |

| Welcome to the elite band of Race Officers. This is a seriously responsible job which often gets abused by people who are not able or brave enough to do it themselves. Whatever age you are you should be proud to have been chosen to do this job which requires skills which can only be gained by being very good at dinghy racing. It is also a great opportunity to make sure you know how races are run and will be the best preparation you can get to understand all the constraints - you'll be better at racing after you have done your duty, particulalry at starting, I guarantee. |

That is a horrific attitude, and one, if held by many in your generation, will see the end of Clubs able to run using a volunteer / amateur establishment. Think what you get for your measly junior membership fee, and the tiny percentage of time that you have to carry out duties (like everyone else) If your Dad does it for you, he obviously does not think that advancing your moral fibre is a worthy part of your education. | Doctor Clifford, ill have you know im a very active member of my sailing club, up till when i left for uni I was a member of my sailing commitee, also when ever there is an open meeing at my club im the first to volunteer to help. This year alone Ive helped at pritty much ever comp the club has held this year. Im a sailing instructor and spend most weekends teaching people to sail so if ive got the chance to sail but cant cos im on duty my dad offers to do it as he knows how mush i miss out on in the summer months. I belive this is a very good attitude to have, you shouldnt go putting people down when you dont have the facts. In future put comments on that are more constucive. |

adam 84 you are a typical oppy kid..if it rains, you don't want to ruin your hair or designer clothing so 'daddy' does it for you...seriously, dont rely on your dad, you learn alot when you're a younger sailor if you're willing to put the effort that is.

Thanks Dr Clifford. I didnt mean the comment in the way that you shouldnt help at ur club, cos ya should. Sailing clubs rely on active members that put effort into running the club. Sailor girl ive put more effort in than most people I know. I know what you mean but honestly a aint a typical oppi kid. eg It took me over 3 years to make enough money to get my boat. I dont rely on my dad. |

UK? RYA site has all the requirements (www.rya.org.uk - look under training)but to be an instructor you have to be 16 (I'm doing this from memory but think I'm correct!) You also need to pass a pre-entry assessment before doing the course, which isn't too difficult if you're doing plenty of sailing (most people I've spoken to are worried about the sailing without a rudder but in my view MOB is more difficult because you have to get it perfect first time). If I remember rightly mine was in a F5 with big waves and I had to slam the boom out to stop the boat as I was travelling too fast. We also did it with a real crew falling in the water and if it hadn't been for the safetyboat standing by them I would have lost sight of them after going 2 boat lengths. You also now need powerboat level 2.
Bear in mind that you will have to be able to sail a range of boats competently and if you're smallish that can be a challenge in a Wayfarer (on the other hand you haven't seen me (85Kg) sail an Oppie).  ------------- Garry Lark 2252, Contender 298 www.cuckoos.eclipse.co.uk |

Just a note on duties which started this. At BCYC they don't give me duties while the training is going on, in recognition of the fact you're giving up so much of your time for the club. hey stu i seem to remember us going windsurfing quite alot in the summer, i also remember you getting stuck at the bottom end of the lake. I also remember you walking back instead of surfing back. whilst you mentioned the subject windsurfing why dont you tell everyone how long it took us to get to anglesea and why considering we live in north wales. You guys are quite lucky to have done OODing at such a young age, we were never included in things like that, im 17 and have only ever asisted once and that was at the open of the youth class i used to sail and only because it was my helm who was OODing. I know everyone moans about having to do it, its cause they dont get to sail but also because they know how much people moan at the race officers if they get it wrong having been there and moaned themselves. All you guys saying about the rescue that you do, do your clubs have an age restriction on helping on saftey cover. |
