i need to make baby bars for my 5000, seen as laser don't make them

will a laser bottom/top section hold the weight of 2 people?

what would be the best way of attaching them onto the racks in such a way that they can be removed?

and no i cant make them out of carbon, class rules dont allow it

*waits for the cherub sailors to answer*

Wouldn't you just weld a bit more scafolding to it?!

If you weld it, it definatly 'has the potential' hold 2 lardy blokes lol!

Oh get you now! I thought you wanted them for a baby to trapeze off of, and I was wondering who's baby!

Yep, pies are the best option!

Are you sure its worth having the racks so far out? as you sail on a lake (me thinks) 'aka, lots of gusts' it wil be long way to get out in a hurry so it would probably be better to have 'em half in and respond to the gusts better. just an idea.

Ring your local metal stockist and give them the tube size of your normal bars and the length inside the racks, they are made of the same material. then ring Laser and buy the brackets to fix then to the normal racks. (Last I heard they still had the brackets)

Because they're after a ladder, not a nice comfy seat. Of course, the seat is a better idea, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, look at something like a 4000- it has half-tramps for the helm, but leaves the space clear for the crew to nimbly leap out over.

i think u can get them off the class site. try emailing them. we used to use the baby bars and u do need it the jump is massive otherwise. if i remember rightly there was some kind of slider thing that went on before the racks went in the boat then that was pinned in place the same as the racks. and i think they are made of the same old lower laser section but a longer length

I like the way you have the racks out alll the way and you could probably get an oppi in the middle. I am sure you have some at BLYM, why not add them in the middle of the racks?

Why not just not put the lead in? It's not like the 5000 class assosiation are going to come after you  Plus no-offence guys but the 5000 is already a bit heavy without the lead

yeh ross is corrrect i need it for events be it 5k ones or handicap, as class rules stat that all lead +crew  has to equal 170kgs in every 5000 and at events you have to abide by class rules...

however while just playing i can remove it

Fella,
The 5000 class is dead! Why worry yourself. Find your self some netting and use that! Much lighter and cheaper and easier to replace etc

Alex

Hi Ratface

on the laser5000 forum, this  topic was just raised in December 2007.You'll find  information here on how to construct  racks;

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/5000classassociation/message/564 - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/5000classassociation/message/5 64

If you've other  5000 boat related issues,  questions etc; by all means feel free to post on the  classs forum.  Generally a  helpfull bunch.

40kg of lead ...  this  sounds extreme and unnecessary.  The  class website have the charts for working out the  rack settings  you need to use. Not sure what size/shape/length you and your crew are, but it'd be worth calculating and setting racks correctly if going to race.  if set real far out - baby-racks would be  handy.

Cheers

  fin.

Fin - i am a stupidly light person(so is the crew) and have calculated out my rack setting/lead.
and the way the 5k forum shows how to make baby bars costs a quite a bit

adam- yet to find out...

Hi Ratface

apologies, hadn't fully understood your need for extra weight.

Apparently weights can be fitted to boats... there's a retaining-bar in the cockpit for them.  Might be worth posting in the 5000  forum - someone might have a few weights kicking around.

If you're getting  bars  made elsewhere (P&B!)- would be great to see the final  thing.... there's definite interest in the class.

By the way,  some laser5000s are congregating soon for racing:

Feb 2nd Tiger Trophy

(Not  dead yet !!!)

you'd be welcome. (I don't  think I will be making it myself  unfortunately).

All the  best,

  fin.

Ratface  quote  - Fin - i am a stupidly light person(so is the crew)

I suppose this gives a new  meaning to having a weight-problem.

The only answer for youis  copious quantities of full fat Ale and  pork scratchings, as well as extra  pie-eating training !

hmm, you "win" by a centimetre. But then, of course, you stand on that. On the other hand, the 5000 and B14 fleets at the Tiger will proabably weigh about the same.

On the baby bars front, a friend just bought a 700- he's light enough to need them on that, so made sure he bought a boat that already had them as LDC charge £120 each for them- and they make little/no difference to second hand value.

Hey Ratface

hope you have a  good time at the  tiger-trophy.   There should be 1/2-a-dozen of 5000 there. Possibly more, so you'll be in good company.
