Hi all, Im after a kite, J80, Melges 24, Cork 1720 etc. Its to go on a 12ft skiff for a "code zero" rig. Im putting on about a 9m mast and pole length to fit the kite! I know ill have to trim it down a bit to fit - but its only as a trial rig for the moment. Can you guys suggest anything? or know of any suitable kites for sale? Andy, are you sure your after a code zero? Light winds? Tight reaching? bar tight luff? No roach? Flat eliptical profile? Not sure ive spotted any J80s or melges running zeros to be honest... ------------- |

Were just learning but it takes two people to get the J80 kite into the hatch at moment, can't wait to see what its like on a 12ft skiff

as isis points out boats you mention rarely fly a code zero , seen one on clapped out toy bouy ian cleavers melge but doubt he would sell it ,they only use on passage races when no option other than close reaching , surely your just looking for a big bstard assy kite rather than a zero ???? ------------- |

but the 12 has a bigger space to get it into than the front hatch on the J80! U the companionway, it's a lot easier!! ------------- Needs to sail more... |

I used code zero in non litteral terms - im after a big deep kite to go solely downwind, as we only race windward leeward. Its just gona be a little taller than my current no1, well 1m taller sitting on a 9m mast. J80 kite is only 5m or so bigger than my current kite - and that fits in the kite bin! So after a big, deep, huge shoulderd kite to overpower us in 5 knots of wind! ps, prob gona be using a tornado main! ------------- -12ft skiff, Team 'CST Composites' -Many thanks goes out to all of my sponsors. Andy you can't cut a kite down properly. If you cut the foot off it and stitch on a new clew and tack it will set like a bag of $h!te and probably stretch and tear. Forget it mate, if you want a big kite I suggest you look for a big number 1 kite from down under and get Bob and Alan to stick it in the container. There is NO WAY an 18 kite will fit, they are ENORMOUS. See my picture on my 18 thread for 12 v 18 kite. I should have probably explained why...just look at the construction and the seams all radiate out from the areas of load. The only way in which it would possibly deal with the load would be to cut it into three pieces so in effect you have a clew with it's radials, head with the same etc and then cut pieces off where the 3 pieces join and restitch. That way, it might not fall apart, but it's absolutely guaranteed to look like a sack of $h!te!!!!! lol when I said cut it down I was thinking like either you or ben did to an 800 kite - by taking a sliver out of the top 3/4 & re-stitch, hard to explain - i have a pic somewhere!! Other plan is to have one made, or try and find one from a big rig 12! Aquas pole, it worked - prob only had a little more flex than simons, but granted a little long and too bendy & Norfolks ballon kite, haha - silly B14 kites! Least it was nothing like Tinners, "THE BALOON" haha! But it got us twining in dick all wind & these were the days before "new rules"!!! ps I wouldnt cut down an 18 kite! Think im gona speak to a sail loft about this one - my original question was simply, is there a donor kite, like the 800 is to the cherub!! if not - im willing to accept that! ------------- -12ft skiff, Team 'CST Composites' -Many thanks goes out to all of my sponsors. Ben did his differently to mine. He chopped the middle out to lose height, I just took a sliver off the leech, clew and head staying the same, purely to reduce the mid girth measurement to get it through. At the head and clew the thickness of the sliver was 0mm, at the mid point it was about 20mm. In general you can't cut down sails and expect them to work as they were designed to. Minor recutting of the leech of a headsail and cutting down such as Iain describes is about all you can realistically get away with for sails that are to be used for racing. Forgive me for being pedantic, but with the direction it's taking shouldn't this thread be in the dinghy section?? |

Dont worry chris, this shouldnt be in the dinghy seciton as all I was asking was: is there a yachting kite which has a mast of about 9m and mast to tack of about 16ft which I can put onto my boat. | Andy, good luck hunting for a suitable sail. You might have more luck on the J80 class association site if you think a J80 asy might be suitable. At 65sqm they're pretty big... |
