Worst injuries, most painful, most impressive? It doesn't have to be to do with sailing. For example a 3 pound speaker cone just fell off the dresser, hit me in the face and made me bleed Then to add injury to well injury the second speaker cone hit me in the back off the head as I writhed in pain

I bounced off a kerb with the side of my head last week which wasnt pretty. The mate who was with me is supposed to be on crutches for a few weeks as a result of the same incident... We're not entirely sure what happened or why it went so badly but suffice it to say there were a few double vodka limes involved.
We're making the most of it though with some epic stories. My favourite so far is the pair of girls we met in the union who think we got hit by a car trying to rescue a cute puppy from the middle of the road. Good times.

Ouch, hope this thread doesn't get too gorey . You are a bit sparse on detail so I'm betting it was quite serious.
Never hurt myself badly, never broken anything that needed A&E or cut myself. Caught things in zips and Levi zips are damn chunky, And "things" tend to bleed a lot, embarrassing when you're out

got too many sailing injuries.
most recent ones i guess are:
at Tollesbury aboard Trinity don't know how but i broke a toe while there last weekend.
and today was not a good day either, due to lack of wind laid in the 300. capsized it and hit head on boom (nice bump on my head now).
also found out how unstable and stupid it is to try and stand in front of the mast, and have both legs slip either way

Somewhere in the middle of pitchpoleing our Hurricane I managed to smash my front teeth (top). Three years later two crowns and extensive root canal work all seems OK.

Worst injury would be stomping home after a (peeved) argument with the GF and then stepping on a broken bottle which slice through my boot and deep into the sole of my foot. Pulled it out (as you so when peeved), stomped the rest of the way home with hand pouring blood from pulling the bottle out and foot bleeding with various bits hanging out of it. The worst part, got to A&E, was the first case of 2001 and had my former baby sitter stitch my foot up as she was the duty sister!
Worst sailing injury was concussion for 3 days after almost having my head removed by a Laser boom whilst sailing by the lee and getting it wrong!

Pitchpole on the dart whilst out on the trapeze (mate driving!) found my eye connecting nastily with the end of the tiller extension. Horrible bruise all around the socket.
I'm planning to get a sponge tennis ball for it...........the end of my tiller extension, not my eye!

Broke my left leg, both arms and fractured my skull. Bone marrow from the leg break entered bloodstream and caused fat-embolism which left me comatose for 10 days and gave me smallish blindspot in right eye. Leg break complicated by virulent infection (open fracture) which destroyed sciatic nerve. Trainee nurse observing operating team in theatre lost count at 200 stitches as they tried to piece my face back together.
Advised by docs to abandon physical sports and consider archery. Since then have played rugby, done half marathons, been clocked at 12.2 seconds for 100m (PB was 10.8 pre accident) and skied my arse off. Life's too short to look backwards.
And chicks dig scars!

Dave .. Thats quite an impressive list! How on earth did that happen?
I've had a Laser mast dropped on my head. Kinda tickled. I think my sunnies took the brunt of the impact though ( they were on the top of my head at the time )
Walked sideways into a wall mounted, metal box. Corner of it met the side of my head ... Lots of pain ... Still get small tingles there. Might go get that checked out soon.
A few burns here and there from cutting rope, and the hot end meeting skin.
Not at the sailing club:
Slipped while cycling in the rain, cut my leg open. 2 x 2 inch cuts in my shin .. Bled for a while. Still got marks and it was 6 months ago.
Slipped while walking to school .. Stepped off the kerb, found some ice, went AOT. Put my arm out to try and slow the pain .. and *crack* ... Broke my Humorous, bone pushed in and up by about 2 inches ( and was poking me in the ribs) Luckily it didnt break the skin.
6 weeks in a traction cast, 4 weeks of Physio, and being told that it hadnt healed quite straight was a bit annoying. Especially in the runup to my GCSE's.

That was done to death .. but no, I didnt.
Kinda hurt at times ...
Sleeping sitting up so the traction would work all the time, slipping down in the night a few times .. and standing up in the morning to feel the bone grating over bone as it slid back down inside the arm ... Not a nice way to start the day!

I dislocated a finger whilst falling off a windsurfing on Coniston. It looked horrible when I surfaced as it went sideways at about 110 degrees to straight. I'm not brave but I took a deep breath and pulled it back into place. I tried to finish the race but was shaking too much.
I taped it to an a joining finger and tried the second race but it throbed. It was very painfull driving home that evening.

The wierdest injury I've had happened during an operation to have wisdom teeth removed...came round from the general anesthetic and my wife drove me home. I had a shower my wife came in and said "whats that" pointing at my todger. I had a (massive ) bruise on it, very dark almost a blood blister, like someone had pinched it . Never found out why as I didn't ask ......and no, not all my injuries are todger related before anyone asks.

Pitchpoled in Palma this spring. Rammed my elbow through our carbon fibre compass bracket and into the mast. Ended up in hospital with a chipped humerous. Basically, it was like hitting your funny bone with a sledge hammer. Went sailing the next day (as it was an event) and suffered in silence. Ok, complaining non-stop...

It's odd how doc's tell you to take more exercise and then complain when you get injured.

Best one was last May: a gust got the boat to gybe and my head was unfortunately on the way, ending up with a very decorative black eye Ah well, these things happen...
A few days later, I had to take the little one to the doctor's for a cough/earache. The doc examined my girl and wrote a prescription rather rapidly, then looked at me with concern, gestured towards her own eye and said to me, in a soothing voice: "Do you want to talk about it?"
When I explained it was a sailing-related injury, she said she'd believe me. No one in their right mind would try and explain traces of domestic violence like that!
Mind you, she didn't see my SECOND black eye of the year, last September. A boat cut me up at the gybe mark and capsized on top of me: black eye, blood and concussion. It was a cracker!

fractured a bone in my hand (one thaat goes from wrist to finger). did it whilst playing rugby today
one of my friends did his 3weeks ago and its still swollen. i can use my hand etc, just hurts a lot. so will have a few paracenamols before racing this weekend.
real bummer though as its my left hand and so changing gear while driving f***ing KILLS
is it better to keep moving it to retain ease of movement after its healed or to try and strap it up to keep it still while it heals?

Judging by fingers they normally strap them up so i guess it would be the same????

but whats the point in strapping up my hand? the bone in question doesnt really move unless you grip something tightly which i cant do because its to painfull. it just really hurts and i have pain shooting down my little finger aswell.
very odd feeling.

ok, fair enough. would you say try to keep the thumb still as thats near the bone, or the finger? or just the wrist area?
or everything?
and what to use for strapping as im not going to wait 4hours to see a doctor/nurse type person.
would a thick tubigrip be ok?

Sailing Injury - Apart from all the usual bruises suffered when teaching kids in Mirrors, would have to be cutting my head open on my Laser gunnel in a F6 gusting to an 8 trying to right the damn thing. Ended up abandoning my capsized (stuck in mud) boat to be taken to shore for someone else to rescue my boat! 5 min in A + E and I was glued up.
Other injuries - tore my cruiciate (sp) ligament at the age of 7 (same as Gazza) and its bloody painful.

Had a nice slam skating the new bowl in Crawley last Thursday. Lost it on the oververt and fell eight feet onto my head. The bowl is concrete btw. Ambulance to Redhill hospital because Crawley doesn't have a head trauma unit, 14 hours in hospital, got home on Friday and felt OK, went to bed and slept til Sunday, still off work with a headache worthy of 1000000 pints of Stella, ringing in both ears and my eyes ache. Apparently I have concussion and whiplash. I am going to wear a helmet next time I skate concrete over 6'.

have you ever read fhm. they have a nasty injuries section. i love reading how people got them. maybe a story to go with the pic. we can all rate it on how hardcore the injuris are and how funny the story is. me thinks this is a good idea.
