hi guys just to see what you would recommend.... i should be doing the 2005 fastnet race and was wondering what foulies would be best, i have a budget of around 500 for sallopettes and jacket/smock.. i was wonderinig what people recommended.. gill, musto etc currently ive got the chose of the gill ocean racer jacket or the musto mpx goretex offshore jacket which one would you recomend or is there anything else? many thanks, ali ------------- http://www.tallshipstock.com/DMAX3189.JPG me!!! top left! |

There is a brand called XM who do fantastic foulies for about half the price you'd expect! When I got mine I was so shocked by the price difference that I asked the guy selling it what was going on. Basically there is a factory in China that makes all the oilies. At the end of the year all the posh brands change colours for the new season. XM go out to the factory & buy the unsold kit and put their logo on it. So, according to him you are getting 'genuine' Mosto / HL kit for nearly half price. I had offshore ocean salopettes and jacket that I wore for about 2000 miles. They were brilliant (especially the kevlar seat on the salopettes) and cost under £200 all in. ------------- Fly Cherub! |

Depends to some extent what job you are doing on the boat. If you will be bow or mast, an "Ocean" jacket will keep you drier. If you are a trimmer or helm, you may find something a little lighter and less restricting of visibility is better in all but the worst conditions. That's my view anyway - and I've done several Fastnets. |

erm well currently im a grinder but i do sometimes stray onto the fore deck as a set of extra hands, the other thing i was wondering was... smocks or jackets which are best being a grinder i need the flexibility and was just wondering which would suite best thanks, ali ------------- http://www.tallshipstock.com/DMAX3189.JPG me!!! top left! |

Tastes vary but for offshore racing I like a jacket with life-jacket already attached, so you put both on with one movement. It means a bit less messing about when you are getting up in the dark to go on watch, possibly feeling a little rough until you are out in the fresh air. I have never tried it but I can't imagine that working with a smock. You can remove the life-jacket for inshore racing. |

i was currently swaying towards the jacket at the moment because of the ease to get them on and off, so now ive really got the option of the musto or the gill, both seem good choses to me but i really want to know what you guys have experienced with these manufacturers, currently im swaying towards the musto because of the "goretex" label on it. thanks, ali ------------- http://www.tallshipstock.com/DMAX3189.JPG me!!! top left! |

| Breathable is definitely worth having if you can afford it. It is not a panacea but you do notice the difference so long as it isn't raining or conditions with heavy spray. I have used Musto gear for years and have no complaints. |

My XM kit seemed like a good buy at the time but has unfortunately turned out to only be worth what I paid for. I also would say that a smock offers greater manouevrability than a jacket. |

Just out of interest, what was the problem with it? My XM salopettes have lasted far better than a pair of Simpson Lawrence ones brought at the same time & worn for the same number of sea miles (approx 2000), which are now losing their elastic in the straps & are non-waterproof in the 'seat'. And this is in the face of outrageous abuse: we lived onboard for 9 months & never rinsed any of the kit (no spare fresh water), & never even hung them up (no wet locker on a 26 foot cat!) ------------- Fly Cherub! |

My experience also - I have a pair of fairly porous breathable hightops. Replaced with Gill ones which cost a bit more but seem to be much better value. |
