I am just wondering if any other lakes have any random outdoor swimmer types who like to frequent their waters?

There are a bunch of Outdoor swimmer peoples who want to swim where I sail, and the council are TOTALLY against it .... but they are protesting away to try and get a 1980's ban revoked.

They want to get a triathlon club involved, as they will use it as a training area.

I dont think they have realised how heavy / fast boats are, and that people swimming are not only very hard to see, but make VERY good moving targets for mark roundings etc. ( Kite up, broad reaching ... How many of you can see through a kite from hiking ( without straining to look under / around it ) )

So, Thoughts? Any else have problems with people swimming on sailing lakes? The lakes you have to PAY to have the privelage of using?

( Oh .. And .... All views expressed in this post are mine only, and represent noone but myself. Some details may be incorrect. If you've got a problem ... Deal with it. )

We occasionly get it , half of them do it quite late but the odd few like to do it on saturday mornings which is quite bad as there is a club type thing for people who want to learn to sail. Also again at the lake there is a very strict ban on swimming. We also get the scally types who think its fun to jump one of the jetties and swim accross to the other one which is bad as the majority cant swim and that that you can never see them. I think the council are trying to stop it though. I also think that it shouldnt be allowed though, if people want to go swimming i think there are safer places they could do it. We also have the problem with people who think they can jet-ski on a lake thats no bigger than 50 meters wide which is stupid, especially when the tides in..

We get swimmers on the sea, luckily they are only a problem if we are short tacking against the tide up the shore. in this case we shouldnt really be ther any way as there is a swimmers only bit, but there are so few swimmers we can dodge them.

Villan,
Start doing laps of honour in powerboats for the winners of sunday racing. They'll soon clear the water

Invite them over to the club one afternoon after sailing

Find an old dagger board and buy some soft fruit.

Show them how much damage a dagerboard will do to the fruit; Suggest this is what will happen if they get in the way.

We get a few at Weston.  Only had issue once with them as was getting quite close to some fishermen on shore.  Wanted to tack and a swimmer (had been underwater) bobbed up preventing me from tacking away from shore for some distance.  Fishermen couldn't see why I wasn't getting out of there way so were not happy!

my motto...

Live and let live.

Just insist they all wear day glow swimming hat and sign a liability waver.

ones dad driving a powerboat almost ran over the woman leading the campaign a year ago maybe he should have ran her over then they wont be trying to get swimming allowed.

she also claims that the only death at Bury lake in the last 20 years was a sailor... well duh swimming has been banned there for that amount of time

however spinni poles make good weapons

or... Villan...

we could let "you know who" loose in the dory

Hehe, The Spice won't seem so slow when its bearing down on you with the pole skimming the surface, will it!!

Actually ... can we try that Saturday? You go for a swim to "The Tree" and back, and me and Dave will take the Spice .. Nothing like a bit of target practice!

Unfortunatley not.

We have to get the police involved 9 times out of 10, as, even when asked politely, the one woman who CONSTANTLY breaches the bylaw won't listen to us.

She ( and she is old .... ) strips off on a bench by the side of the lake, leaves all her stuff there, and goes off swimming. Reverses the process when she gets back in.

They have just got the idea into their head though that a peice of rope will stop a dinghy, kayak or windsurfer. We can go through it, as can the windsurfers, and the canoes will go under it.

I want to see the look on a swimmers face one day, when they realise that the 300+ KG of boat coming at them with spray flying everywhere will not only not SEE them, but they wont avoid said swimmer.

Oh that would be one of lifes few precious moments. Before you get carted off for 25 years for murder of course.

TT we are the swimmers at drayote mate, i'm a bit worried about the algae and the t-foil mate !!!  I understand you saw my brother at the local services today

It all adds up ...

120 ish KG of boat

2 x 65 KG people on it

Thats 250kg there, and it all soon builds up. the weight of wet clothing, bottles of water, waterlogged spinaker ... etc etc etc

( I counted people etc in with the weight of the boat ..... the weight is still all added to the momentum! )

seems these swimmers are stepping up fighting for the right to go swimming in the lake James.

Think we need to have a day where they come and see what props/centreboards can do to swimmers

why they want to swim in a lake full of goose sh*t, aswell as algae i dont know

We have one at BYC who is about 60. Everyday he cycles down to the club in his skimpiest speedos, puts on his snorkel and mask and goes for a solitary 15 minutes swim before returning, towelling himself dry and cycling home again. He doesn't speak to anyone and no-one speaks to him.

HE DOES THIS RAIN OR SHINE, WINTER OR SUMMER.

Now to be fair he doesn't interfere with the sailing and I have no problem with his actions. He is rumoured to be a past Commodore of the club but I cannot confirm this.

But this is Ballyholme. The water is cold enough to justify a drysuit at any time of year. It's frizzin at the best of times. And yet he is of slight build and never seems to feel the cold.

Its a magic skill men obtain once over 60....must come from wearing a vest all year round, even in a heatwave...

Time to stand on the shore, next to the swimmers and have a pi$$ in the water just as they start getting in.

my old club up in Scotland had to request that a couple of members didn't use the club facilities when they wanted to do triathlon training, even when there weren't people sailing, as it was worked out that the club's insurance didn't allow people to access the water from the club without personal bouyancy, but that there was no such restriction from the shore round the rest of the loch. And of course, with scottish access/trespass laws (at the time, there weren't any) as long as they caused no damage, they were perfectly entitled to do so.

For those bodies of water that do have controlled access, you could try and get whoever controls it to insist on personal bouyancy as a rule (may be unpopular with windsurfers).

That, or as swimmers are getting into the water, be sat nonchalently sharpening up an old daggerboard's leading edge.

Comment loudly about how your eyesight is fine, you know, boats are just about big enough for you to make out without your glasses on.

 HI,

i don't really see a conflict here.  As an swimmer and a competitive sailor on a modest level I see both sides of the question I hope.  I think it would be fool-hardy for a big rig sailor to use their spinny near the beach, they are under an obligation to keep a good lookout----- on the other hand most swimmers on beaches and lakes probably favour an early morning dip before the wind is up and the day's racing has started.

yes but where me and James(Villan) sail mainly it is only 30 acres max and the swimmers go from one side to the other of the lake,
also there is one person who seems to go for a swim anytime of the day whatever the weather

also there are cold water springs on the bottom(if they still work) which could potentially kill them!

trouble with a 5 tonner is when you do your driving test you might have to do another test to be able to tow it

How big is your lake? I saw a video on Youtube of a foiler, the camera panned around to follow him and it took in three (heavily tree-lined) banks of the lake, assuming the cameraman was standing on the fourth bank it didn't look that big at all. I'd post a link but Youtube is blocked at work  :o(
