Along the Glove line .... Has anyone got any good recomendations for good sailing boots?

They need to be good for both Hiking and trapeezing / running around the boat.

To give you an idea of boats I will be sailing:-

RS300 and crewing an RS800

I swear by these:

Much more grip & feel than the thicker/stiffer razor-cut sole types.  Only downside is that walking over large stones is a bit unpleasant, but that's the trade-off for a thin grippy sole.

i just get the cheapest ones that fit, for hiking a laser it isnt a problem. although crewing on the furball and 800 (well i used to do that occaisonally) it was a little bit slippy but nothing major.

I've got three pairs of the rooster ones on rotation....
They seem ok so far, but my old sailing boots soldiered on for about 10 years....

Totally saitsfied with my Typhoon boots with razor-cut soles. Have no problems on textured gelcoat even when my crews are sliding all over the place in their Gill 'trapeze' boots.

I agree, those Gill trapeze boots are useless on the wire. I gave up trying to find a single pair that would do for both hiking and trapezing so I ended up buying two pairs:

Magic Marine Skiff Boot for trapezing - very grippy sole, but quite thin so it can be a bit uncomfortable round the dinghy park, a bit like a windsurfer slipper. There is a separate section for you big toe that stops your foot sliding about inside.

Gul All Purpose Boot - Originally I bought these hoping to use them for trapezing as well, but they just don't grip well enough. Good protection for the top of the foot so they have been relegated to hiking use only.

Depends what your sailing. On both my 600 and now on my 700 I wear Teva Protons, which are awesome on the compound of non-slip used in the gel-coat on RSs. However when I had the 49er the Tevas didnt protect my ankles from the edge of the wings so I went back to Aigle Bora boots from my Laser days and they gripped brilliantly, they dont however work very well on my 700 (very slippery) so back to the Tevas.

Ive got the gill trapeze boot and wont be buying another pair when these die... very limited grip considering they are designed for trapezing,

Aigle Maramu, simply the best!  Great for hiking, trapezing, very suitable over drysuit feet, with wetsuit socks, or also barefeet.  Loads of grip, and extremely stylish  Possibly not ideal for a skiff, but fine in a 505, Fireball etc.  Also they're good for hiking with a reinforced area on the top where the toe strap sits.

I've had them for about 10 years now (on my second pair).  They're even suitable for yacht sailing - foredeck etc.  5 stars!!

Absolutely - especially since Gill stopped making the previous equivalent type of their 'Competition' boots.   They were even better with razer cut soles.  Can't believe they were not selling well enough to continue making them.  Neither are cheap but you get what you pay for I suppose.

My mate just got a pair of the aigles for £25 quid cos they had been on the shop window for ages and were slightly faded!

Be careful there - I bought a pair from a shop window once and they quickly perished and started cracking - UV damage!

I love the Aigles, they last for ages. My Boras must be 6 years old now.

Also I just picked up a pair of magic skiff boots, seem really well designed and the crew loves them so I had to give them a go

No ankle support though, and they don't have reinforcement i on the top, do they? So not great for hiking, but good for trapeze, I'd have thought.

Ok so no ankle support But with padded toe straps do you need the reinforcement on the top.

rooster hiker boots, great grip on the soles & don't have to wear two layers like you do with the Aigles (which I agree are great).... still not much help when you stand on the mainsheet mid-tack though!

Can anyone recommend an ankle boot for Dinghy sailing with a slighty thicker sole ?  I am currently limping with a bruised foot through standing on a pointed stone on the slipway for the second time in as many years  None of the boots I have tried have stopped this so far. Any recommendations ?

I agree with the Magic Marine skiffy one. They are awesome for trapezing a skiff. I also agree they are not the most suitable stuff to run in the dinghy park as they are quite thin and soft. They might be unapropriate for Hiking has they don't protect the ankle that much.

I love my Rooster ones, the short hiking ones:

These are great, as are the other "Zipped boots" they do. The zipped are similar to Gill older boots they used to do. Mine have just started wearing out on the sole after 4 years (smelly yes, but still good). The Rooster ones are really comfy and also have a very good sole compared to the Slipper ones I also have (made by Gul)

The Gill Trapeeze/Hiking boots are really poor quality. I had the hiking ones and sent them back as the velcro tab split meaning the boots never stayed up.

If you are after grippy shoes, get the Rooster ones, top quality!
