Subject: What Boat

I am looking to return to sailing having sailed both Enterprises & Lasers.  I am looking for a boat which I can sail both on my own and with a crew (Wife, daughter or son).  I have been looking at a Laser Vago but am not sure can any one give me some advice.

Here on the forum, you might not get the most unbiased views about the Vago. But to me it tries to be everything anyone would want in a boat. Family sailing, trapeze racer for 2 or singlehanded trapeze boat with spinnaker.

I've sailed the Vago quite a bit and I've got mixed views on it. It can be quite entertaining in a blow, but I don't feel it lives up to the marketing (suprise, suprise). I've always used the jib when singlehanded as I've had issues bearing away after a tack without. I've not seen many people manage to single hand on the wire - mostly it ends up with a broken tiller extension! I also know of a couple of issues with the rudder - the bolts on the pintle seem to have an issue with shearing.

I guess key questions include where do you sail, how fast do you want to go, do you intend to race, how seriously do you intend to race...

If you want slow prehaps a Miracle. But for what you may want the Vago may well be the best choice. I have no experience with them personally but there is one at the club thats always beaten by my 420 apart from downwind!

NS14 sails equally well singlehanded or two up.  It has very small sails, no spinnaker and no trapeze, so is ideal if your crew is inexperienced.  It is also about 5 stone lighter than a Vago and is purpose designed for husband/wife, father/daughter combo's.  It is roughly the same speed as a Fireball, so quick for its type, but not rocket fast - quicker tha the Vago though.

PM me if your interested.

Maybe a laser 2000? Fairly big and sounds ideal to me. You can reef it, race it, cruise and muck about in it. Has a spinny but not sure about a trap.

If you can't carry it, don't sail it!

A bit more traditional perhaps.....

Firefly?

Or a Wanderer?

Firefly isn't that stable for young people, i used to have one and it was very tippy! Possibly as well an old rondar 420 would do the job, they're stable (virtually impossible to capsize) you can pick them up pretty cheap as well!

Thanks for your replys what you have said has put me off the Vago.  What are your thoughts of the RS Vareo or possibly the Topper Vibe or Magno ?

The Vibe is basically a little Xenon, they look good boats they have a small sail area so probably manageable compared to the Vago, the Vareo is another good choice if your mainly sailing by yourself and is also good if someone wants to go for a ride and finally the Magno is an OK boat but it wouldn't be top of my list!

How heavy are you and crew Kintore?  also... will you be sailing mainly single handed or with crew...Maybe a 2 hander occasionally single handed (Laser 2 Regatta good for that) or a single hander occasionally with a passenger??

RS vareo is a single hander, RS 500 has same dimensions, is a 2 person boat and is also manageable as a single hander. Compared to vago much better boat, when using only main, it's still easy to bear away (with vago this is indeed difficult). I suggest you try the RS 500 at LDC as it feels more responsive then a laser 2000. I own a RS 500, so I'm a bit biased

Rotomould vs Polyester...

Roto (ie Vago) = heavy but durable - Flexing might be a problem

Poly = Light, easily repaired & stiff

Think about it when making the choice

A second hand N12  is a good cheap option.  Quite feasible to race one  singlehanded with the addition of some jib cleats.

Theres a good all plastic one on the class assoc website - N3296 - now.#
