Should race management teams stick to recomended RYA PY's for boats for
which they have no previous data at their club?
For example, should a boat with a 3 blade fixed prop be given the 2%
allowance suggested by the RYA over a boat of the same design (but not a
strict one design) or be forced to give time to the boat with the 2 bladed
prop to make working out the results easier for therace control?

Paul,
I've had similar thoughts on this one for a while now, but since I found the Byron system, I have just insisted that members get a Byron number. http://byronsoftware.org
Simply get your members to fill in all the details and they will be sent back a number for their boat FREE. The system uses a bit of maths and the primary PY numbers to determine the numbers for a given set of measurements.
Over the winter I trialled both the Byron numbers against PY including following the RYA specimen race methods and by the end of the series the numbers I had were pretty much the same as the Byron numbers.
Pretty much all of the cruiser racing clubs on the Bristol Channel are now using Byron.
Give it a go !
