I was wondering just how big and representative our little world of forumites was, and I'd be intrigued to know the daily average number of individuals posting on the forum, and perhaps even more interested to know how many silent readers there are out there.

Any chance of some figures, Mark? Is it possible to distinguish the web-bots from genuine users? Our 3000 forum stats report huge numbers of hits, but I can't quite believe them.

I run non-sailing bulletin board using a popular open source package and like a lot of other boards we've recently had HUGE numbers of robot registrations. They do it to boost their websites up the google rankings. I seem to have stopped them but it wasn't easy.

The relation to your question is that there are people out there writing programs which do a good job of pretending to be people and they aren't that easy to detect.
