I didn't have a clue what it was about not very long ago so i looked it up and my understanding of it is (please correct me if i'm wrong) : 1)There are "Acts" in the years between the actual cup event. The purpose of these acts is so that boats can measure their speed against each other and to provide entertainment. The latter acts also contribute points to the first round robin stage. 2)Then there is the "Louis Vuitton Cup". This is a series of match races to eventually determine who gets to challenge the defender in the "Americas Cup" 3)The cup itself. The defendant and the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup go head to head in a best of 9 match races to determine the winner.
