Not as a result of rot, just the result of removing old fittings and finding the area of deck that they sat on hasnt been bleached by the sun like the rest?

Any suggestions

bleach!!

A dilute solution of bleach applied with a cotton bud, or similar dependant size, should do the trick, but the colour match will be a problem.  Probably best to then sand back over an area and revarnish

The other option is to totally strip and then restain the deck.  A bit drastic, but the best result

We found that when we did the old woodie foreball that most dark or black staining came out once the deck was back to wood.

You may fond that if you strip and revarnish the lighter patches will blend in and not reaslly be noticable.

Hi Ian,

The stuff to use is a solution of oxalic acid crystals.  This topic has cropped up before.  Just put 'oxalic acid' in the search facility on this site and you will see the previous threads.

It sounds from your post that it isn't dark patches that are the problem, but that the rest of the deck has faded. The answer to this is to be patient, and now you have no fittings in that area, the sun will fade it to the colour of the rest of the deck. Oxalyic acid and bleach are just about OK at getting rid of dark water stains, but won't help much here. If you sand the deck right back, you will sand through the sun bleached wood to new wood, but you will soon run out of veneer.
