The wife is doing inconveniently well in her Pico, much to the disgust of myself and the other failing wanabees. However, confusion reigns with the boat handicap.

RYA post a SH and DH number (1258 &1262 I think) but don't specify standard or race sail. Laser have their own no. for the race rig as a SH (1117?) but were unable to tell me where it came from.

Our sailing sec has now applied the Laser no. but I reckon it looks far too punitive and is not based on returns, how much difference can a 3 battens and a tiny bit of roach make?

Anyone been down this road?

The RYA say 1259 for a Pico single handed with a sail area of 5.9m2 (which is even more confusing when Laser say that the standard main is 5.1m2 and the race sail is 6.44m2 !)

Laser say: 1176 for a race sail with a crew but don't specify a PY for a Race sail without a crew

The Laser PY seems a bit harsh to me, when I sailed our Topaz Race with its Mylar race sail we sailed under 1210 (which seemed OK) so I guess that a Pico is possibly slightly slower than the Topaz Race - there's certainly not much in it between the two of them and that might a good starting point for negotiations,

Nigel
