Indeed they may be able to type quicker, but this is due to the progression in how the language is written and not the progression in the development of the language.

I am 34 and did not touch a keyboard until I was 14 - yes folks I used a pen and pad to communicate.  My 7 year nephew is already developing his keyboard skills.  It is reasonable to assume that in the fullness of time a pad and pen will become as outdated as the slate and chalk.

Text speak is one development of modern language - as is internet speak (IMHO, FYI, ROTFL etc) and some of these words are being adopted by the populous.  For example we no longer use thee and thou, words which were in common useage 200 years ago.

The full use of text speak in everyday written langage is as inappropriate as being dressed as Coco the clown at the funeral of a biker, but in the correct context there is nothing wrong with it.  The important thing is to recognise where and when to use various language styles - keep txt spk on the fone, and use the correct developed written language for everyday use

I have to say the only time that I have ever lapsed into text speak is if I was sending a longish text that over-ran one message and became two.  A few 2s, lack of spaces and a dropped vowel here and there often made it squeeze onto one and saved the cost of another text.

With a keyboard and a message board I really don't see the point...

Also on most phones it takes longer to do a "2" rather than "to" because you normally have to hold down "2" to change it to a number, if that makes sense

Cue Pierre!!

Got in before Pierre, Roger! I've only got two points to make. The first is that the only reason that the majority of teenagers can type faster than the more "mature" members of the population is that, in the main, they make little or no effort to do it accurately.

My second point is this: while "txt tlk" is probably all that is required for the vast majority of the so-called communication carried out via the medium of the portable cellular communication network, it is incapable of providing the precision and subtlety of nuance that is necessary to express any idea or opinion worth communicating in the first place.

Could Pierre or BNS please check my grammar, punctuation and spelling?

Neil

Well done Neil.  I agree whole heartedly, and well done on the spelling and grammar.  Good effort Rog.  Gold star and 5 house points.

I think that is a bit of an unfair remark, just because someone communicates by text doesn't mean that whatever they have to say is worthless.

I certainly agree with you there - but the use to txt spk does vastly limit the audience for the comments to a point that renders the communique pointless

or alternativly why not phone them up or go round and see them, as oppossed to sending texts non-stop and effectively taking more time than actually putting a call in.  Not that text doesn't have its uses.

I'd take advantage of your dads private health scheme and see a doctor PDQ if you know what's good for you.
