Anyone got a assymetric and sails in the southwest? weve just got a 49er and are going to be looking to do some racing at Plymouth next year? there are a few 800's, iso's, boss's and 4k's lying around at mountbatten which ive never seen move. Even if we just organise a windward leward between ourselves, i know of a few 49ers and a cherub/12footer that would be interested. The racing scene seems to have died off, wouldnt it be nice to try and revive it a bit?!

I am hoping to bring my contender down in the new year but it may not be the most exciting racing against a 49er.

Needs to sail more...

There is no racing on the sound (from the Plym side) specifically for assymetrics, ie, no club provides windward/leewards. The Mayflower and RPYC (or Royal South West) provide round the cans during the summer time but not the winter (I don't think so anyway). I'm presently enquiring about the possibilities of establishing assymetric racing but its at the very initial enquiry stage. If all else fails, we can just organise to sail at the same time and persuade someone to start and finish us whilst round a set course whilst the fireflies etc are out with the Uni. For the 49ers, this will work okay as its the first boat to finish wins. The 12 foot skiff might just have to race on the same basis, if it finishes first it wins. The establishment of racing within a club would have the benefits that we could do handicap racing which would mean the 800s, 4000s, Isos, would be more inclined to sail and it would benefit the area more as a whole.

i think for now though, it would be great just to get some boats out on the water at the same time. Chris and i will be out every saturday or sunday or both, and wednesday. I think john and rob are the same

Bloody miles away and quite a few 49ers on the sound, why race against other classes when you can race in class?

Rick (wee-man) from the uni sailing & yacht club is meant to be getting one in December, but not spoken to him for a while, so not sure if his plans have changed. There are a few people I know who were thinking about other classes such as B14s that may be swayed towards sailing 49ers when they see there are numbers building. I definately know that Gonzo (James) would be sailing 49ers if he could but he's just finding difficulties finding someone to steer for him. Kosuke is also interested in crewing too. Asides from the University, other people down at the clubs have been showing a lot of interest in the class, think seeing a few boats out on the water will probably be added inentive to move classes. I've also got a funny feeling that once there is some activity with 49ers, the RS800s will spring back into action, which will be quite positive for PY racing as the 49er doesn't give massive ammounts of time to the 800, unlike some other classes which could be grouped in a handicap start if we arrange something with a local club.

We're (well me and Kita anyway), aren't looking for events to turn up to. What we're trying to establish is some sort of weekly racing within our area, without having to travel to do it. TASA is good for events but doesn't really solve the problem of there being no club racing for our type of boat in our area. In addition, being students, club racing is more suited to our timescale, and given the oppurtunity to, the 49er circuit accomodates our events needs.

As for the 12, havent got it yet, as i need the money from aqua! Or if ive finished the moth first, ill just sell it and use the money to pay for the rest of the 12! lol!
