and that would be why all the top speed sailing weird contraptions are using kites these days would it??    Think about it Alex.....kiteboarders have twice the sail area and half the board area, the only problem is that we have to edge the board to get power upwind so are limited in speed.......but a kitesurfer on hydrofoils...........!!!

not sure i see the point there a kite boards hradly in the water anyway, foils would just add more drag wouldn't they? or have i got the wrong end of the stick?

wrong end of the stick mike.....when you're going downwind you don't have to edge the board but you cannot get big speed because you'll soon be going faster than your kite and it will be behind you.  But when you go more upwind you have to edge the board significantly to keep your heading, but the consequence of this is a lot of drag and its very inefficient.  So If you put on on hydros there would be a lot less drag more upwind so you'll be able to go faster

ahhh so you put the foils on so they then suck you upwind. comprende wont help downwind though. and the board will be a lot heavier making it look a lot less interesting.

fat people???!
would that be why 12 year old kids are equalling the adults in competitions then??  Weight is really not an issue in kiting as the kite is always going to be too powerful for you.
Windsurfing is NOT faster.  kitesurfers beat the windsurfers in the last san francisco bridge to bridge race.  Kites are being used in virtually all of the new speed sailing world record hopefuls.
Kitesurfers can swoop the kite, jump and kiteloop whenever they like....windsurfers have to get a decent size wave and a howling wind to do even a little hop.
Kitesurfing is easier to learn, easier to master, and easier for young kids to do.  That's why it's such a fast growing sport.  AND its still developing very fast unlike windsurfing which is just slowly dying....
And its not cooler.  If you see a kitesurfer and a windsurfer on the water you're eyes are automatically going to go to the kitesurfer - how does he do that? how does it work? how can he jump?  AND kitesurfing girls are way hotter than windsurfing girls!

I beg to oppose!!!

well everyone has there oppinion and mine is it is GAY as a windsurfer aswell as a dinghy sailor i dont like kitesurfing!!! i windsurf down on the south coast (shoreham&worthing) and most of the kitesurfers are fat!! the reason they go kiting instead or windsurfing is cos they can stand up on the board.

the tricks in windsurfing are much harder and look so much cooler, some of the things u have said there are rubbish like there is 12year olds doing flat water loops and some sick freestyle!!

pb I can jump in quite small chop, in big wave I can get quite high. I don't have a problem with kitesurfing as a sport, its just that all the kitesurfer are so in your face about how good they think it is.

you've already said that luke.....
and no i bullsh*t you not i have seen 12 year old kids kitelooping.  Tricks in kiting look MUCH cooler and the hard ones atre no less difficult.

foaminatthedeck: you make a good point. I don't like it when people are in your face about their sport either and since i am no hardcore kitesurfer and am a crap windsurfer im probably in no position to judge either way!

So explain to me pete how kitesurfing is better, is it just because it's easier? Sort of shot yourself in the foot there m8ty. And 52 knots is not slow pete, thats the top speed i could find on the net for a windsurfer m8. There is a reason why windsurfing is an olympic sport!

Is it just me or does Faithfull's appear to be a tad schizophrenic  - bothsides of the argument. Both are cool sports, looking to go into windsurfing meself thoug, for some reason it appeals more than kiting dunno why. Have to take issue with the eye being drawn to kitesurfers, perhaps because they are more rare than the frenzied packs of kitesurfers, though i think i just rekate to it a bit moe. Don't need huge swell to get air off a windsurfer, i was surfing in some pretty por swell off Goring when a windsurfer came alon and was doing some sick tricks off the same waves.

alex, i don't see how ive shot myself in the foot.  Surely being easier to learn is a good thing?  It's not easier to be really good at but the learning curve IS way quicker and easier than windsurfing.  The land kites are actually extremely different to the standard ones on water.  The land kites have a huge load of lines to always get tangled up and fly around like a dememted sparrow.  The kite you'd actually use is way steadier, has way more power and doesn't get tangled up every 5 minutes.

PB in a way i agree with you Water kites are a lot different to land power kites.

First off they are only single skins, and have a tubular section which you blow up to help it float and give the kite shape (bit like battens) this means they are less powerful and more controlable than land kites consequently they use bigger kites.

Land power kites are completely different as most are ram air. This is there are two skins with pockets all the wat allong the kite and sealed trailing edges so the air is forced into the kite (to give it power).

I personnally don't have a problem with twisted lines this is probably because I put them away properly!

Most power kites land or water have 4 lines, I don't know of any that have more.

Kitesurfing is probably a very good way of getting people involved in water sport, I have never done it but will at some point it just looks such a good idea.

I  have 3 power kites I use on land (and 1 stunt kite) the biggest is 4.5sqm and I can get airborne with that. Your average kitesurfing kite is probably around 10-15sqm,

Carshalton!!! how can you say that about kitesurfing!  and I thought you were a clever lad

Well said Les!!

And do try kite surfing as soon as you can - you'll love it!!

I've got a DVD about the invention of kite surfing and about all the guys who made it happen and, by all means call me sad, watched it almost every single day over the summer and just can't get enough of it.

visit the http://www.redbullkingoftheair.com/ - Red Bull King of the Air website and you'll see why it's such a cool sport.
