I love my Solo, (great, close, competative racing in a big fleet,) but it doesn't get my heart racing, so every time I see something more exciting for sale at a good price I start dreaming...I have tried to be practical, but it just hasn't worked out: latest dream is a Laser 4000- sailed one at Minorca and loved it, but that was a few years ago, and I wonder if the sheet loads might be a bit high for my damaged elbows and hands.

I am also conveniently ignoring my lack of a crew, the fact that I haven't helmed a two man boat regularly for 25 years, and I've never raced an assymetric other than at Minorca. So: Am I the only one who does this?

Don't keep talking yourself out of it!  Buy something exciting before it's too late.

The times I've nearly but not quite gone for an RS600 / 700, contender, cherub etc etc .

The Solo will still be waiting when you're too old for anything else - and a racing heart means certain death!

Isis on the other hand may be taking it too far - unless he's involved in organised crime, I'd hate to have his student loan repayments!

Trying to find some nutters to help me buy the 18 I was sailing this weekend has crossed my mind but I drew the line there..

Id definantly agree with Nick though... whats genuinely stopping you buying them other than your sanity? Go for it!

My dad started sailing at about 35, after 10 years sailing WF him and his mate got an ISO, they've never been a world beaters but they have had a good few years sailing and have loved it. (and there swimming improved lots in the first 6 mounths).

Try anything once.

Southern Finance

Its a fairly old and pretty overweight little number and only just enough wind to just get 3 stringing so perhaps not the best situation to base my opinions on...

Official verdict is they are fast. Very Fast. Whipiing past most of the scottish 'skiffs' fleet is something of an experiance but only when your watching other boats or fixed points. When your heads in the boat looking at the rig the sensation of speed is somewhat lost... being so high off the water on such a big heavy boat took away most of the on-the-edge twitchy sensations that make the cherub feel so stupidly quick and I was never actualy scared which was a little dissapointing..The sheetloads were phenominal though and its a bloody long way down when your stood on the end of a rack thats getting a little too vertical! Cracking boats.

Was an awesome weekend and id jump at the chance of doing it again... But Ive not been swayed away from certain 12 foot classes just yet!

Yup know what you mean when you say the feeling of speed can be lost. The best bit about 18s is the shear power of the boat and when you get them really jumping down wind in a big blow. They are also awesome up wind.

But for me the 14 is my favourite for the feeling of speed and the racing (just a shame my crew has just sold his just 6 months after launching it!)

Never sailed a 12 but they do look cool. Fast downwind but so slow up wind I saw them racing in Sydney when we were there with the 18. Will have to blag myself a go on one.

who has southen finance now and why is it not doing the UK events?

I was sailing with Dave Low and Colin Gardner and I think ownership is split between Colin and the helm who ive not met. Dave may have a share too? Its based at largs and not being sailed too much due to other comitments... sounds like it may be up for sale pretty soon, hence trying to convince myself I dont need another boat!

Which brings us back to my original post....

I hope to have a trial sail this w/end: I'll keep you informed on progress!

Anyone want to crew a 4000?

Well, the sad truth is, sheet loads are too heavy for it to be enjoyable, so after much negotiation with the G/F we have bought ourselves an RS200.

Hopefully this will be sufficiently exciting, without damaging either us or our relationship! Let you all know how it goes- first sail is scheduled for next Sunday, subject to weather. (Whether she'll go or not I suspect.....)

Should be a new adventure at least, my first bit of assymetric sailing!

I thought it was incest and Morris dancing!

My old climbing partner took up Morris dancing and had a lot of fun. His brother moved away.....

Get a Vortex!

I have a Solo for when its not trapezing weather and a Vortex for when it is. Great combination, works very well.

Tried the 200 last w/end having borrowed a teenager as crew. Great fun! Don't they go fast downwind? Big difference from the So-slow, but actually not as tippy as expected. Our race finished in a near 30 kt gust, when the mainsheet block exploded! Hmm, never seen that before...

The teenager's parents were not happy: They didn't mind me taking him, but unfortunately, I brought him back!!! Oh well...

Compared to the 300 they are actually not that quick, but put that assy up, and it all gets quite exciting....

They appear to be quite quick in the breeze. Not sure how though with a piece of bog roll for a kite

Borrowed Mark O in the end, having phoned around half the club!

Going out with Louise on Sat, then maybe Jane on Sunday.

You going to the D+D? I won't be there but my Father's going to collect his trophy- I haven't told him I've bought another boat, yet

What was the make of block, Rob?

And what were you doing, gybing without the kite up, maybe?

It was one of the old Holt blocks they used on the early boats, and I was sheeting in at the leeward mark! There was a bang and a shower of plastic: Basically the pulley bit split in half so the sheet was going round the spindle. It was useable, but rather heavy and harsh on the sheet! I did show it to Nick Peters, on my way to the chandlery, (just out of interest), but it's boat no 660, and I guess the block was original, so a few years old. I replaced it with a Harken carboratchet thingy, not cheap, but looks good. Incidentally, the Solo also has one of the Holt ratchets, but it looks like a newer model.
