My wife and I are looking for a new 18foot cat to go sailing with. I have done a lot of Hobie 16 and big boat sailing and she is learning to sail.
We are pondering whether to get a skiff or an 18ft cat.
We are looking for something that will forgive our early mistakes and yet progress with us as we get better.
Which 18ft cat seems ot be the reference for those entering the class.
Speed is fun but time sailing as opposed to repairing or swimming is better.
Used boat definitely by the way. no cash for a brand new X4 from Bimare.
Which boats would you recommend?

There are loads of F18's around. Check the F18 website and also chack what is sailed locally to you.

REally depends on budget as to what boat to get.

Agreed, depends on your budget.

Note that none of the F18s are significantly different in handling and none are more forgiving than others. (Except maybe downwind in a real blow).

If you want a forgiving boat then the F18 is possibly not the choice to make.

Poss Hobie pacific or Nacra 550?

if you chose the right wind conditions an f18 fine and it has a very stable platform if you take a novice out in a 3/4 in a 16 and then an f18 they will find the f18 more comfy and easer to sail and you always have to option to not use the kite. As for boats an old tiger will properly be the most user frendly abnd there easy to find old un-competive ones and they very well behaved with waves and high winds with the deep v hulls, avoid the flat hulled boats.

Any difference between the F18s when it comes to sailing downwind and avoiding pitchpoles? Thinking of hullshapes here, for an example the Capricorn looks a little bit different from the Tiger.

The capricorn will be less likely to pitchpole downwind if your pushing it very hard but any deffernces can easily be changed just by baring away 5 degrees or so
