Has this been done before?

The universe is 6 dimensional.

Just how may degrees of freedom (variables) are there to consider at any one time in dinghy racing? E.g.

The course is two dimensional = 2

Sail controls: main-sheet, jib-sheet, mast rake, kicker, cunningham, outhaul = 6 (total 8)

Does any other sport come close (which and what score)?

We must be gods!

Mast rotation

Fore/aft trim

Batten Tension

Plate heights (same on both tacks, or lift the windward one ?).

Diamond tension; slack and let the mast bend, or tight and bend the mast

Spreaders flat or raked.

Rig tension

All race courses are at least 3 dimensional as they exist in time as well as space.  Predicting windshifts is time related as well as space related...

And depth too, as my dagger board often discovers!

Bigger picture: wind direction, windspeed and rate of change of both

I was wondering how many fishing has, Britains most popular sport ... sunny, raining, erm ....

The universe may 'arguably' be 6 dimensional but we all race boats in our petty 4 dimensions (if you include time). At what point is a physical dimension ment to be a variable?

Before you fall over patting yourself's on the back about how many VARIABLES you can deal with consider this - when racing a GP over a Laser you have more boat speed related variables to consider, does this make the penalty for miss calculating them better or worse. Base jumpers may only have 1 variable to deal with, when to/or not to pull the cord.... if they get it wrong will they just get wet, or will they die.
