Im going all northern... heading to a joint glasgow/strathclyde course doing Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering.
Very Chuffed, but I might need to reconsider my anti-drysuit opinions...

I got into Trinity Hall, Cambridge to read maths with physics. It's sad I know, but I enjoy it, and I'm well relieved I got my offer.

I might bring it if it's likely that I'll find someone to sail it with. I was going to sell it as my current crew isn't going to uni.

Question for those whove done the whole uni team racing thing...
I checked up after TTs comment and strathclyde do run a fleet of 200s for team racing.
What happens when they race against other unis who seam to
predominantly use larks/fireflys/laser 2s? Im guessing they must borrow
boats... but then why spend all that money buying 200s to train in when
they are totaly different to the boats which will be raced?
-------------
|
Posted By: timnoyce
Date Posted: 21 Aug 06 at 2:29pm
If they have a fleet of 6 RS200's then they sail together. 2 teams of 3 boats. What probably happens is that when they go to events they have one string of 200's and then another string of 2's or fireflys depending on how many teams have entered, how much space they have etc.
I prefer the idea of I14 team racing... they know the score

firstly im on the same course as ben and calum but ben i should warn you that strathclyde no longer have their 200's from what i hear. Thye sold them a long time ago. However i'm good m8s with the commodore of the glasgow sailign club and they are about to get a brand new fleet of fireflys for the new season. i've been weighing up the option all summer of which uni team to join as im sure your aware we can join either but i think im going to join glasgow as everyyear for the past 4 i have helped at SUSA and the glasgow team jsut seem to have so much more fun where as the strath team are very very elitest and DO NOT DRINK AT EVENTS! now what is that all about!

Not a bad summary TT a few corrections though.
1, Classy Jesmond? Not any more. Full of Stag dos and hen parties from down south getting wasted on stella and shots.
2, Student population handling their liquor. Not the Posh ones who seem to come for Newcastle uni they just mince about in pashmenas (boys n all) sipping bleeding chardonay or poxy bottled lager, pretending they didn't really want to go to Cambridge or Oxford (or Exeter or Durham).
3. None of the finest drinkers in Newcastle are to found in town, at least folks from out of town will never find them. They tend to leave the irritating loud non-ale selling establishments for the local chavs and visitors.
4. Brown ale is evil , but ordering it in a pint glass is funny

Ahh Soton...the joys of almost being garotted on the Flowers Estate, students being beaten up by 12 year olds and pregnant women with umbrellas, being so close to the Solent but sailing on the Spinnaker puddle at Ringwood, a bar called Titanics in the Union that was burnt out within 3 days of opening, beers at the Black Cat and The Gate and being told to leave the piano alone, the "Glen is the only place to be" superiority complex...
...if you're doing Oceanography and French the joys of trekking from ocean village up to the main campus and back...
...but if you do the Sh!t Science course you are being groomed for Cherubdom...
Stratchclyde and Glasgow is the much better option (presuming they still sail down at Largs) and combine that with a pint of heavy and a nip in front of the fire at the uisge beatha, and the fact that sunny days are very nippy ...

nippy my arse!, as im sure all you cherub folk visiting this weekend will find out... Anyway yes SUSA is still held at largs, Glasgow train at Bardowie Loch Strathclyde, well i dont know where Strathclyde train as when they used to have the 200's they trained at Castle Semple Loch but C.S. Loch has silted up and the 200's are no longer there and have been sold. So as they have no dinghies at present i presume they do not train. They do have one yacht though but its reeady for the scrap pile and is so small it should be a dinghy. But Glasgow are getting new Fireflys and by the sounds of it if Ben has any sense he'll keep Numb at Largs so some of us will be sailing at Largs regardless i know some of the Glasgow team do at present anyway. I'll be keeping the 300 there as its def. the only place to be on the Clyde.

Well quite. He is the father of the shipping forecast & founder of the met office.
The area was named after him very recently: it used to be called Finisterre but the French RFI forecast also has a sea area called Finisterre, which is completely different to ours. I think that in the interests of 'diplomacy' we changed to Fitzroy but kept the slightly politically sensitive Trafalgar .

But surely trafalgar is named after cape trafalgar near cadiz or do the french and spanish want to call it something nondescript?

should be heading north with me if I get her a bit more sorted but if

600, moth or cherub, it doesn't matter because you can race with us on the SSR circuit with any of them! although i think you should bring the 600 because there is going to be so many of them at SSR next year we may have a chance of beating the musto's for numbers at 1 or 2 events!
