Haggis' last note on the olympic forum suggeting a 420/470 hybrid reminded me of a story from my old club.  It involved two oppy hulls and an international 14 rig, single-handed!  Aparently it was the brainchild of the man that went on to design the RS700, Alex Southern.  I have never been able to meet the guy to find out for sure but it sounded like fun.

Anyone else been out modifying boats, trapezing lasers?, asymetric toppers?, (wasn't there an oppy with an asymetric in Y&Y a couple of years ago?) piccys would be cool, would make a good feature in the mag.

Had an idea a while back to race Hurricane 5.9's against Dart 18's with no handicap thus :

Start a race at Grafham with hurricanes and D18's and the hurricane(s) sails for 100 minutes around a square course and then a chase boat drops a bouy. Hurricane then sails to the shore, de-riggs and loads the boat onto the trailer and checks out at time 'X' at the gate at GWSC.  D18 does the same distance and heads in (approx 17 minutes behind in SCHRS) de-rigs and does the same.

Drive to Rutland and re-start the race with no handicap so the dart needs to sail for 118 mins and the hurricane for 101.

The Slower Dart 18 should be quicker to rig and unrig and so gain time of the 5.9.

Would need someone to ensure that the trailers were road-worthy and secure before leaving Grafham......

now that is a cool idea!!

Only thing is, there could be issues if the wind suddenly increases or decreases for the dart

the dart also has a motorway advantage due to
weight!

Urm.....I can tow (in Germany) as fast as I dare with my scooby....

I'd added the time points at the exit of GWSC and entry of Rutland to negate any speeding etc .....

Talking of the 420 / 470 hybrid does anyone remember a boat called the Toptimst? (an Opi with a Topper rig)

Now that was weird...

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer.

very cool!!!  Wonder what the handicap for it would be?  My guess is about 1200, if you can stop it going down the mine.

And for my next trick.... currently working on putting a 49er rig on my B14, should be cherub-like in that the missing 2&1/2 foot of hull length should make for an interesting bear-away.  any donations of an old rev.5 rig much appreciated.

lIghtweight boats should come with a warning - the problem is it's too
easy to forget they're there... not good if you go past a man in blue.

I'd heard that during development of the Magnum 8, Claridge built a Moth using the front bit of an 'A' class cat hull to prove you didn't need any stability.

had a thought today, anyone ever taken a flying fifteen and swapped the keel for a daggerboard to see how fast it would go (given all up weight would be down by about a quarter)?

I have made some fairly stupid machines, most break pretty soon after being lanched. However the highlights are the old classic of a laser full with an assymetric and a trapeeze. Mast broke.

Then an Dart 18 hull (with no tramp, couldn't find it) with a breeze 6.0 spinniker and racks added. We took it out in a 4 and it flew, gybing was fairly hard running across the beams but fun. If you ever do this don't ever dig the rack in as the boat stops and you don't.
