Just in the process of rigging and setting up my new mast but have got to lower the gooseneck a bit to fit my sail. I know the Contender has a reputation for having a low boom... but how low is it? Could people measure the height of the boom from the floor just so I know what is a realistic height!

Cheers,
Tim

Roughly 60 cm (Just crouched down with BA on and got bro to measure height 5cm above higest point) - i do however have a cringle in my sail and i am a lanky bast so others may have it lower. Saying that IMO you should be more concerned with getting a height that you're comfortable with in the Cherub rather than going for the minimum as is seen in other dinghy's.

They might have, but they release the kicker to tack. The best thing about being rather small for Contender, I don't have to let the kicker out. I've got enough other things to think about!

Like... quick release the kicker before it completely capsizes... Get on the centreboard and grab the trapeze rope for leverage!!!        & nbsp;         & nbsp; 3 times
Phew, it's been a busy race today!

Best advice I can give is go and measure the clearances under the boom on an MPS and go no lower than that for the crew.

On both boats you need to be moving fairly quickly and preferably on your feet whereas on a Contender it is a case of prostrating yourself on every tack!

Hi Noycey,

29er and RS800 are 1m. Also Atum Bom (Cherub 2688). 49er may be that but I have not measured it myself.

Aquamarina (Cherub 2681) in original spec was 1.1m, which is a lot.

Norwegain Blue (Cherub 2637) is 0.85m, which is ok but low.

Mango Jam (cherub 2682) is 0.7m but has a very raked boom.

Loco Perro (Cherub 2685) is about 0.85m, but has a gnav which makes a huge difference ergonomically.

hmmmm. mine is going to be 63cm unless i put some sort of stump in place. I guess we'll just have to sit in the bar in the light stuff... what a shame!

Luckily I'm lanky as hell as well, it helps when learning to tack the Contender!  Being 6 ft I still can't get under the boom without dumping the kicker though, you must be tiny...

At a guess the B14 is about 80cms, its enough to get under when running across the boat (10ft 6 from rack to rack!)

Primal Scream 2686 is 0.75m at the mast and is about level through the boat. I have a gnav which helps.

When I first sailed the boat it was about 0.6m and that was just stupid so I got the leech taken in by about 20cm

The height on AquaMarina was originaly set by me (6'3) crouching in the bottom of the boat and putting the boom just above my head. It would probably have been better to do that with a less lanky person.

I'm (slightly) less lanky than Granite (5'9'') and I found Aqua was lovely to crew: perfect for running through on tacks & gybes.

The 10cm lost between Aqua & Atum makes a noticable difference (hence the horrible knee v dagger board injury the other weekend) so I'd definitely suggest going for a boom as high as you can reasonably manage (or gnav/angled).

I'm 5ft8 and 9st (1,72 m and 60 kgs in French money) but I've just started sailing a Contender and don't go out in real wind (top F4 was the strongest I've been in - and not by choice...). I don't crank the kicker as hard as others do, but I can tack easily with the kicker set for the conditions. I'm an adept of the KYAG position.

You must be out on the wire in like 5 knots!

I'm 6ft and 11 stone (all muscle of course ) and find it a blast although getting under the boom is a bastard.  Had it out in a force 5 and still think its the best boat I've ever had, even though it cost a tenth of my B14...

I'm well versed with the KYAG position.  Usually find myself in it with the boat on its side, me still stuck under the bloody boom.

I usually start trapezing in a Force 2 and start swimming in a good 4. At the very beginning, it would take me at least 10 minutes to right the boat, as I can JUST balance its weight. After a few tips from real Contender sailors in our club, I can get the boat upright from a turtle in less than 2 minutes... Forget winning races and competing in Nationals: that's the achievement of the year for me!!

Tim ignore Contenders, it's the height of the boom at the stern (ie scraping the deck!) that's the issue, not the gooseneck.

Mine's at 1m if I remember rightly but I do have that tunnel thing that you don't, and my kicker was stupidly far back.  That will be sorted with my new deep boom but I will lose a bit of room due to the shape.

If you are stuck I have a spare short piece of 800 mast which you can use as a stump.  Mine is unsupported as you know but my foredeck's higher, if you just glued it in as is and put some tube down to the chainplates it will probably be OK.

Cheers
