had a mad idea just now, if a 2 litre bottle of diet coke and a packet of mentose can fire into the air about 5 metres can this be used as a method of propulsion? (windsurfer board and lots and lots of coke) discuss. ------------- 600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it. Also International 14, 1318 |

well the amount of coke you would have to carry to get a decent power output would be huge and probabley sink the board. You would prob need a few crates. fruit ones work better than mint ones. we tried it at work a couple of weeks past. Engineers probaly should get banned form watching Mythbusters ------------- ...yesterday I couldnt spell enginner...now I are one!...... |

we did it 2 ways. first just put the mentos in the coke and get and impresive fountain. 2nd time we emptied a litle bit of coke out and put a paper towel in the neck of the bottel and dropped all the mentos in to that. then put the cap on and shook it up a it then threw the bottle on the gound. big bang and coke evrywere, the bottle was pretty much split in 2.
[semi-risponsable bit] dont try this indoors, dont stand right over the bottle if you are dropping mentos in and dont throw the bottle at or towards anyone [semi-risponsable bit\] ------------- ...yesterday I couldnt spell enginner...now I are one!...... |

Filey regatta this weekend. 200 peeved sailors, most probably playing with coke bottles and mento's on Saturday evening... Marvellous :D Incidentally, another really fun one is to get an unsuspecting victim to lie down, fill their mouth with as much popping candy as they dare and pour coke over it. This trick works with most sweets and beer too- hilarious to drop a sweet into someones bottle and watch beer spray all over them, the sofa, and the peson either side of them ------------- |

what if you put the coke in the water, then it would float as it is full of gas and it would probably make more thrust because it is pushing against something more solid (this is just a geuss) ------------- 600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it. Wouldn't work - the bit that reacts in the coke when mentoes are added is most likely the phosphoric acid. Putting it in water would just dilute it. ------------- Not all chemicals are bad. i meant if you put the coke on the bottom of the windsurfer board. and i thought i heard somewhere that there wasnt actualy a reaction between the coke and the mentos just that the mentos gave the bubbles somewhere to form so there were a lot more bubles produced which made the fountain, like shaking coke just much much better. ------------- 600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.
