Just got a towbar put on my new steed (BMW 118D SE) and was pleasantly impressed how well it towed. It did set me thinking though, as to what the perfest car is for dragging your boat around.

Ultimately you want something with comfy seats, which will waft you home after a hard day sailing and return 50mpg whilst holding all your paraphernalia.

Audi A4 Avant TDI anyone. Or a Rover 75 Estate if you sail a GP 14...

Used to know someone who towed a Tornado behind a Black 911 Turbo !

I'd probably go for an Audi RS4 Avant which had also been sent off to MTM / one of theother loony Audi tuners for around 550BHP

For true credibility the boat must cost more than the car though.

Ideal combo is a brand new *insert class of choice here* with all the best gear, towed behind a knackered old van with a mattress in the back cos you can't afford a b&b!

Hmm, I think you might know me or something:

car: £505 on ebay (does 55+mpg even towing). It's too small to sleep in the back

trailer: £850ish (husband won't tell me as he's a bit embarressed about amount he managed to spend while unsupervised at Welsh Harp)

boat: err £8000 ish? Haven't finished totting up all the receipts yet...

Back in the 80's I crewed at the Merlin Nationals for someone who towed his boat behind a Bond style Lotus, which was fine till the trailer got a puncture...I had to change the wheel, and than when I got back in he was paranoid I'd touch the inside of the car with mucky fingers...

Give me an old Citroen anyday...especially as I have a habit of breaking cars...I managed to stick the handle of the trolley on the combi through the GRP boot of my ZX when reversing about 18 months ago...really must take the duck tape off and mend it...
