How do the guys crewing get into that kind of thing, to me it seems like a dream. Obviously it is extremely hard both physically and mentally and im guessing the helm is a very successful proven winner from somewhere, but i always wonder how these guys got there job? Anyway im sure nearly everyone here would love the chance at doing it i was just wondering if anyone knew anything more. Sorry if this has already been asked,

thanks

I think that it is a good question I wouldnt mind knowing either its something that I would love to do and get into but its hard to find out which direction to go.

The other option is the clipper race where you have to pay to do it, when I looked into it it was so expensive that it became a no go plus you had to have a certain amount of ocean miles under your belt  Bla Bla Bla

Nooooooo Southcoast, don't put yourself down! It's not a stupid question and I bet everyone who read it thought to themselves "Hmm yeah, that's right... How DO you get to be on those big machines??..."
All we could have answered is a string of: "Sorry-mate-ain't-got-a-clue!" If you'd checked the Email-notify thingy, it could have made a very tedious read.

got a reply for anyone interested, i certainly am!

Thanks for your email.
Crew selection is led by the skipper, team leaders and their advisors and they will find people who have one, some, or all of the following qualities:

- successful world-class yachtsman/woman, particularly professional sailor
- offshore sailing experience, especially in a past Whitbread or Volvo
- a skill in a sail-related trade or industry such as sailmaker, rigger, marine engineer, boatbuilder
- an active sailing programme that regularly brings them into contact with the skipper and his/her advisors on the racecourse.

Word-of-mouth is the way this system works.

In the case of ABN AMRO TWO, however, there was a very different selection process used to find the crew. They launched an international campaign to recruit young, high-potential sailors and ran a six-month training and selection programme to find the final crew. You can read more about it on the Team ABN AMRO web site here: http://team.abnamro.com, type "selection process" into the search box and read the articles.

I hope this answers your question, and good luck getting onboard.

kind regards,
Marion

A good thing to look at is the Skandia Race training program - Some one is going to pick me up on not getting the name correct so I appologise in advance - but they do a training camp and then from that they feed the top ones into other races and training boats etc. but I think the Selection to actualy start the camp is pretty stiff to start with.
