at these nationals in hayling island, on the saturday there was 6 - 8 foot waves which broke 12 masts, including mine plus ripped my mainsail and wrote one boat off, the was some racing on the sunday and i managed to get a mast because andy holmes from wet n windy drove all the way back to bristol to pick some masts up for everybody, we raced for 6 and a half hours non stop, then on the monday there was no racing because the wind was too strong and the sea was too rough.

yeah, i got off lightly, i dont think it was 8 ft waves, 6 at top. We should've raced yesterday but the iso's couldnt even handle their own boats and were capsizing all over the line, only blowing 5, gusting 6. shame really as being the heavyweights we got a good start but after the windward mark the RIB came over and told us race abandoned and back to the shore. really pis**d off, so we went for a blast round the harbour with the kite instead. good fun but a bit of a disappointing weekend.

Its not too good an advert for topper, 12 masts going. We've only snapped battens in those sort of conditions.

Couple of points: 1 for the RS 10th race, I'm sure we were told to come back via the beacon, and under no circumstances go through the cut if it was windy (can anyone confirm this? My memory is vague!) I understand the majority of breakages were from people going through the inshore passage (the cut near the shore). This is only hearsay, (sorry if I'm wrong!) but it sounds like a lack of good advice if it was true...
2 Sorry if I missed you Buzz 591/585. You may've seen me and my dog (Black Lab Bitch) wandering round on Friday, or sailing the Solo Sat/Sun (just me, not the dog). Friday I spoke to a couple of the competitors to give them advice on racing in the harbour, 'cos I was sure you would.... We should have a thing on site so forum people could meet if they are going to the same place on the same day!

we were told to go round the beacon but i think with all the swell it was a bit tempting for some to cut between it and when they capsized they just hit the ground as it was so shallow. How did you get on on sunday? did you race in the charity pursuit?

Hardly Toppers fault -
1.If people ignore the advice to avoid the Hayling Bar it's their own fault not Toppers (I recall a Fireball Nationals with 20+ broken masts in similar conditions). I've been thro the bar in 'very interesting' conditions (mixture of stupidity and bravado) and despite surviving intact certainly wished I hadn't.(Gone over the bar that is).
2. Topper aren't sailing the boat, they aren't the ones capsising and sticking the mast in the sand.
3. Topper don't even make the masts! - So it's more likely Selden or Superspars who manufacture - but see 1 & 2 above.
Anyone - in any boat - who capsizes on the bar when it's at its worst and survives with just broken battens is incredibly lucky!

yes but the worst waves were actually out in our sailing area out in the bay, that was when most of the boats lost masts, and then people went into survival mode and had to get back to shore. Generally speaking, the race officer couldve found out that these conditions were going to happen as he had access to the forecasts but assured us it would be fine, then even before we got to the race area we were caught up in a big swell and the race was postponed for 30 mins before it was abondonded, as boats were all over the place on there side, and with only 4/5 ribs for 55 boats the resuce cover wasnt great as one of those boats was normally laying marks and sorting that stuff out.

the weather was blowing a 5 gusting 6, the sea state was not good, some big waves, 6ft swell, and it looked alrite from the club until you got out to the bar it started to get rough and then very difficult to get back.

The Solo's had a training session in the morning, in perfect conditions, but by the time we launched for the club race, it was survival conditions- I heard Chimet was reading gusts of F7.
Like I said, on Friday I spoke to people assuming they'd be sailing in harbour, although in fairness, it was pretty crowded with club racing, oppie training and out-of-control keelboats from Itchenor.

It says in the rules that its not up to an ood to decide if you go out or not! Well not exactly but its your responsibility to decide based on your own abilities!

True, it is no-ones fault but your own if you set out in conditions in which you cannot cope. it is the helms responsibility to decide wether the conditions are managable, and the boat is 'sea worthy' .

Thank Jebus we aren't doing any events there.........Holy Christ we are!!!! (maybe it's just a marketting ploy for Topper, "We do extreme boats but..............." (fill in the last of that sentence if you wish..........)
(or maybe it is, we tried to build High Performace boats but..........)

thankyou, we did ok, came 12 out of 28, not as good as the kielder event, but we got a 2nd in the last race today so its all good, if only we could have beaten Richard Stenhouse ('stenhovie' was displayed on the results board ) in the last race.

Nah josh i can't make it down that weekend, but it should be a good laugh. And feva kid or whoever you are, the bosses managed a spectacular pitchpole in those winds and snapped there mast in 2 places, and correct me if im wrong, but do they still even make them?
