I was wondering if someone could help me answer this question. why do laser sailors all block up the slipways with there trolleys? is it just to annoy every other boat? or is there a proper reason?

For the same reason they dump their boats any old way in the middle of the dinghy park and you've got to manhandle half a dozen boats to get to the Topper racks.
I think it's gregarious instinct. They sail in herds, do the same thing at the same time and, like sheep, only flock in one direction at once. Take an individual sheep (no BWD, drop it, that's not what I mean) on its own, and you're faced with an animal of average intelligence. Put it in a group and the brain shortcuts.

The same principle applies Laser sailors, teenagers of all appearances, soldiers of all uniforms and dedicated supporters of any sports (except football supporters: there's no average intelligence in the first place).

So BNS, i think what you are trying to say here is that development class sailors are inherently more intelligent than SMOD'ders. Proof at last!

Now now we do have some very nice Laser sailors at my club. We find the visitors we get for opens are not as friendly though.

But as for intelligence I would refute that claim (although I too am an EX-Laser sailor).

As for leaving trolley everywhere they do annoy me when they move my trolley especially as I tend to beat them all back to shore!

For many of the reasons above, Laser sailors at our place are sometimes referred to as "me-me's"

not a claim... its FACT. It's common knowledge that teachers are always right even if I did 'read between the lines' somewhat

Yeah that should be ok just this once. If you start hanging out in 'gangs' you might want to think about a change of boat

I kinda got that when i sailed the laser on the scottish circuit. The 29er and 420 squadies are a great laugh though

i've found the majority of laser squad people are funny when you get to know them

the only laser sailors i know who leave boats and trollies in the way of other people are the really self oppinionated ones who think that they're the greatest and everyone should bow down to them (or pull their boat around theirs etc). leave lasers and their sailors alone please don't tarnish us all with the same brush just because we belong to a particullar SMOD class which happens to have some pr*cks in it who forget that there are other people

.....does that make any sense or am i waffling

Makes sense completely L4.7. With the vast quantities of Laser sailors your gonna get a lot of pillocks, but also a lot of nice people.

Sometimes it can be too your advantage (as a stb bot) to give a port boat right of way. Cant think of an obvious situation off hand but i know of plenty of times where ive been told by a stb boat to hold my course and they've slowed to let me cross.

they want to make you go to the un-favoured side of the course, maybe there is more ide there or the wind is heading you on port or something, they let you cross because they know they will catch up.

or they just don't want to get tangled up with you up the beat....and if you want to go to one side of the course you might want to just let the port-tack boat go, also remember that tacking's slow and you don't want to do too many....we used to do it all the time in oppies, oh the good old days!

tacking isnt always slow.

usually slower than sailing in a straight line though....AND the rules say you can't leave a tack faster than when you went in.............

although it may be slow it can also be to your advantage to get some good wind

im talking about a case where you would let him go to get to some good wind, of course it doesn't apply if you wanted to go one way to get benefits from more wind...the whole point of this discussion is to give reasons as to why a starboard boat would let a porty go.........

Talking of laser sailors... today at the windward mark i (mirror) called for water on about 3 lasers, and was asked if I could point a little higher... cheek... and also told i had no water when i was almost round the mark

Lasers will stay upright quite hapily on their own when you let go of them which means people have no right to moan about how hard it is to launch them!

Im sure people really are not that ungrateful and would hold your boat while you got your trailor and theres so you could both  ove your boat quickly its not that hard. Unless you are really quick and finish before everyone else or end up coming in last when everyone else is in the bar.

This would be fair enough if lasers didnt sail in fleet almost 100% of the time. If you hav never been told the 'buddy' system then  you must have been living with your head in the sand!

Put simply; you find yourself a friend, launch at the same time, one holds the 2 boats, while the other puts your trolleys in a sensible place. easy really
