My next problem is that the rubber o-rings on my inspection hatches are probably 10yrs old and very perished.

They are 6" holt inspection hatches, can I buy new o-rings or get some lengths of rubber and make my own?

Shirley I can't be the first person to ask this, can I?

Holt do replacement rubbers, hopefully they still do ones in your size

If you cannot get replacement rubbers in the 'old' 6" size there may be a metric equivalent hatch that could be made to fit (of the rubbers may fit as rubber does stretch.

We had some perished looking seals on the fireball I used to crew in, we just vaselined them up and they never leaked.

They still make the hatches (even if they call them 150mm) so they will still make the seals. Check out P&B or LDC online shops.
