Ok guys and gals, what do you all wear under drysuits, quite a tricky one i think- you want to look 'cool' while ur waiting to go sailing with the drysuit hanging round your waist (or hips if ur a girlie!) but then you want to be comfy and warm on the water...So whats 'cool' to wear under a drysuit!!

I wear a pair of adidas trackies, and a fleecey top. And if it's really cold I hide a thermal "teddy-bear suit" underneath.

If you wanna look 'hip' then ditch the drysuit! Why do you think they make winter wetsuits?!

I survived a 20minute swim in the middle of foremark reservoir last december wearing a steamer and was fine. When i finally got back in the boat we kept sailing!

I think that generally people make big mistakes with what they wear under a wetsuit. You see people layering on t-shirts and socks but if anything that makes you colder!

"Adidas trackies...thats very chav for a sailor!"... you've obviously not met Stu then!

Musto do very good thermal stuff, pretty cheaply. Usually wear it by itself or wear trackies and a jumper over the top. Good for doubling up as yachty layers too.

If you got in the shower before putting your drysuit on it might work well... wouldn't be particularly DRY though i don't think!

My mate wears the most hilarious christmas jumper under his drysuit, if I had a pic it would be well worth the post! (not in the habit of taking a digital camera into the lads changing room though...)

I always used to wear a wooly bear suit under mine but drysuits are a bit 1990s to be honest. A 3mm long john or 3/4 length hikers (depending on boat) a couple of craft thermals and a spray top got me through the last 3 seasons in relative comfort and id rather be a bit chilly than sacraifice the mobility.

5mm steamer for the winter, shortie for the spring, boardies for the summer!

I have noticed that trapezing in a wetsuit is much more comfy than trapezing in boardies and a rashy though. I guess that little bit of extra thickness helps to spread the load better for an overall more comfortable experience!

Screw mobility! If it's cold I'm wrapping up.

But seriously, I have never been sailing in a drysuit and thought,
"Damn, I wish I had a little more mobility".

I just don't find it an issue. Maybe it's something to do with the trackies?

Im with tim on this one.  its all about steamers for winter, boardies for summer and the shortie for the days inbetween.  The question is 'is a steamer gonna be enough for sunny ol' glasgow town for the next 4 years of my life?' or should i invest in a dry suit while i have the money? hum a tricky one...

For drysuits I find the Gul dinghy breathables give me as much movement as my steamer ever did. I sued to wear a 3mm titanium steamer (to reflect the heat back apparently). It kept me warm even on the coldest days but I really really do hate stinking of neoprene after a day sailing.

I just tend to wear a very thin 'wicking' layer under mine with a jumper if it is really cold.

As for the other suggestion....I think some of the stuff from figleaves.com would look great under a drysuit IF we had shared changing rooms......

Calum?! Is it going to be enough? If I have to wear my steamer for the cherub nats in the 'summer' in Scotland I'm not going to be best pleased!!

Admitting that there is a problem is the first and usually most difficult step to overcoming it!

Norweigan Blue, Mango Jam, and Atum Bom made it up... pitifull forecast put most of the rest of the fleet off attending unfortunately and from what ive heard only 2 races were sailed over the two days in the end...

Pah! Ive never owned a drysuit! I sail all winter in a 3mm wetsuit. The only thing i add in the winter is another rashie and a warmer hat and the only thing i feel cold is my feet! From wat ive heard you sotherners are still complaining of the cold when we move to shorties.

It's a myth that wearing a drysuit gives you any less mobility than a westuit. If you don't have mobility then something doesn't fit. Wearing a trap harness is gonna give you sold all mobility, never mind the drysuit!

im a big woss, this winter ive been wearing a wolly bear, a pair of cycling shorts, skiing socks, 3 tshirts, 3 fleeces and a nice warm fleecy hat.

if i can move in all that you lot should have no problem with just trakies under your drysuit.

I think that the level of sailing might decrease but the number of people in the changing rooms might increase (depending on how many gorgeous female sailors you have in your club).
