I'm struggling to walk (normally) after to many long beats at the weekend, probably due to lack of excercise over the winter. I have been looking for a design for a hiking bench, something you could knock up in the garage and put in front of the TV for the evening to help get fit for the season ahed.

Anyone got any links or designs for a hinking bench, that won't cost an arm and a leg to make?

LOL

You probably want to have a look at your hiking technique if you find it hard to walk., Make sure you put even pressure on both legs and dont turn you toes in or out because that builds up one set of muscles more than others. This is very painful and can lead to Physio - believe me.

There are many articles out there on that but I dont know any links off the top of my head. Que the forum hiking  's response

I know many people who have hiking benches and rarely use them after a season or two. Personnally I haven't used mine in over a decade. I know it is cliche but you just need time on the water!

tbh he doesnt say which boat it is that he sails but im going for a wild guess and going to say Lark. But definatly get the technique correct as messed up knees are definatly not fun... though (un)fortunatly I cant blame all of mine on sailing.

Just quit the hiking boats!  I've completely wreked my knees and will never be able to do any road running or long distance running again.  It's just not worth the effort!

Tools- circular saw. (ask a cherub sailor if you don't have one to hand- you can find it at the top of their sailing tool box next to the gaffer tape...TT)

Circular Saw? far too crude... a decent grinder is what you need, multi purpose! cut stuff, shape stuff, smooth stuff.... and sparks too! you just dont get the right visuals with a saw..
(see website in sig for graphical demonstration of uses)

Cut off the rear section of the hull behind the cockpit. Make up a wood or metal frame to support the centre bit thats left. (use an old cherub hull for the framework, best thing for it... TT)

Surely the cherub hull would BE the centre bit? why use it as a frame? you must remember not all boats are built so badly they need external support to hold them together...

Take one Laser hull - preferrably not the one you use to sail. (hmmm, ideally one which you have been sailing uncompetitively for the last couple of years- TT)

Tools- circular saw. (ask a cherub sailor if you don't have one to hand- you can find it at the top of their sailing tool box next to the gaffer tape...TT)

Using the saw, cut the hull thru' forward of the cockpit, discard the front bit. (don't discard it, commission some modern art with it and sell it to the council for the Tesco roundabout- TT)

Or turn the front bit into a 6 foot skiff

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

Cheers for the links and the thoughts. My knees are shot anyway, three arthroscopies and the removal of the medial meniscus from BOTH knees means i have to work hard on my quads to help support the joints.

Didn't do as much work on them through the winter and suffered on Sunday. Need to build them up, so i'll give training a go for as long as it takes to get comfortable. Agree time on the pond is what we need, the season is in full swing now for the Larks so a bit of training and time out there should do the trick.

Walking is much easier today
