Walking the dog at HISC today, I came across a sorry looking bunch: it seems they are running an Olympic classes training week this week!
Jees, it was effin freezing!! They must be mad! They ranged from a couple of pretty motivated looking 49er crews, to some shivvering Radial ladies, one of whom was complaining that she couldn't feel her hands on the beach. Never saw if they went out, I went home for a cup of tea, and put the kettle on.
Mind you, it's our first race of the season next W/end, hope it warms up!

You should try sitting in a RIB all day in that kind of weather, I have had ot do it about 4times so far this yr and I have been sucessfuly avoiding it!!!
It started snowing on sat whilst I was on rescue

Yes. I Have to agree with Knightmare. Sitting on ribs in the cold and wet is not a lot of fun. It makes sailing in the winter feel warm

What about windsurfing? We still go out? and due to my lack of money
still in my 5/3 summer wetsuit + a thermal rash vest! Was out at the
weekend, fortunately the snow was only in the shady areas no idea on
temp but I do know it was 'chucking filly'!!

And how long are you going to last if you had to wait for rescue in just a shorty - not sensible.

Yeah but I do have to admit I used to go out in winter in shorty. and managed to get hot in that. Its definatly hotter sailing than it is on a rib.

Hah - S coast softies
Bad old uni days:
Change in Portacabin (holes in every exterior and interior surface).
Sail clapped out, leaky Laser 2s (even lower freeboard and therefore wetter than usual)
Once thoroughtly soaked get in rescue boat to RO next match
So far not an uncommon experience -
But we were at Aberdeen - so sailing in Peterhead Harbour (the inaptly named "Bay of Refuge". With twilight times (and sometimes full darkness!) we often finished by the light of headlights. Only once do I remember slushy ice forming where the hull was meeting the water on a light air day!

Brilliant. Sound like great fun. Cant say iv ever had ice forming whilst sailing but have had to break the dory out of the ice to go and 'blast' about the lake to break up all the ice that was too thick for the boats to break before we could go sailing

A few weeks ago an Albacore at Whitefriars confirmed the (I thought) urban myth that sailing in ice strips the paint off the hull...interestingly, it wasn't from the forefoot, but around the stern area! Boat now out being repainted...

I remember a race a couple of years back in the Laser. My gloves froze solid, the mainsheet froze solid and ice formed on the deck whilst I was sailing (made trying to stay in one place very interesting). I retired not surprisingly!

1987 Bloody Mary I turned round to look at my helm and he was covered in ice, looked down and it was all over the front of me too. Every time you tacked, you had to wait for the ice on the jib sheets to shake off, so there was a fraction of a second where the jib was backed and you weren't sure if it would come across, or if you'd go in! It was windy too. The rescue boats were just pulling capsized people out of the water and taking them ashore, leaving the boats, so there was a pile of capsized boats at the leeward end of the reservoir. When we got ashore, they threw us a rope and we held on to the boat as they winched us out, 'cos the sides were covered in ice and you couldn't stand up! I thought if we capsized I would die...
BTW for all you Cherub bods, Flat Stanley won!

sounds like this years b-mary. was a tad chilly. and i wish it had been windy cos it was one boring race. even the 49er's wernt moving. funnyest thing was the foiling moths running around thring to stay dry.

5/3 refers the the thickness of the neoprene. Generally steamers are 5mm in the torso to help maintain core temperature, and the arms are 3mm to allow for better mobility. Hence 5/3.... not a typo.

Too cold? Bunch of girls more like! Went sailing yesterday on Plymouth Sound and it felt like the middle of summer in Scotland. Just need to keep active on the boat to keep yourself warm.

Sailing with ice crystals in the mainsheet is always a good test of manlyness, an hour or so of playing the sheet soon separates the men from the boys!

It's quite amusing sailing with ice on the decks of a 49er, especially when the deck is silver, causes a black ice effect. Crew slips =
