Orginally sold by a company called Bell Woodworking

The Fireball insignia is pretty neat.

I think the Cherub scores top marks for inappropriateness

The Laser 4000 etc bit of putting the insognia on the jib really sucks.

What about some pics?

Contender's insignia is quite bland, but someone in Germany raised a question: he's having a new sexy black mainsail and wonders if the insignia on the sail is still class-legal; instead of being blue/white/red/white/blue, he's got blue/black/red/black/blue... Maybe he should get a length of white cloth to patch it up, or a bit of paint...

The osprey and hornet ones confussed me the first time i saw them. The hornet symbol looks like it could be an osprey coming in to grab a fish. And the osprey symbol looks like a head on view of a hornet

Nope - it originates from the burgee of the founding club (Dovey Sailing club) and represents the legendary bells of Aberdovey.

Fair enough. Must have been synchronicity for Bell then. I wonder if that encouraged them to sell the things?

Its interesting how stories get about. There was a long standing rumour about the Cherub getting its name because the first owners' wife said "I don't know what class it is, but its a little cherub to sail". Nice story, but when I researched the history I found that
  1. The first Cherub was a high profile member of the Pennant Class and won in that class in its first season
  2. The crew in that season was the designer John Spencer, not the owner's wife
  3. The individual boat was called Cherub from the start of the build process

So the story was 100% myth!

The phantom is the best insignia and on the other side of the coin you ahve things like the finn, solo and even the albacore insignia that have clearly had no thought put into them at all.
