RS600's are incredible to sail. They are very fast in most winds and are a great laugh. They require a bit of skill to sail but are extremly fun. They have a very round hull so they roll a lot which may catch you out at first but after you get used to it they are ok. I think from about 13 stone you have narrows and bellow thirteen you have widies i think. Overall a great boat for peanuts amount of money.

Would you say that 16 stone is to much to sail one then???

16 stone is probably the upper limit but is not excessive. You would suffer in light winds but come into your own in F4+ . The guy that won the Winters last two years running is around that weight, there are one or two guys in the fleet around the 15 stone mark and they are competitive.

I would echo BBSCFaithful's comments, yes it is a little tippy but not beyond the abilities of a good club sailor.

Can you give me some tips on what to look out for when buying a 2nd hand 600??

I do really want one and have for ages.  I think I will have to take a look at the finances and see what I can come up with.  I saw one that was forsale for £1000 but it said something about the mast whats that all about??

The first generation of 600's had Angell masts which had a slight design flaw, in that they tend to break. Ideally you would want one with a Superspar mast, although £1000 is a bargain, as long as you ensure you have new for old cover on your mast for when it breaks!

Check there's no play in the U-bolt that the kicker fastens to - there is no way to tighten or replace it without cutting a hatch in. The mast step can work loose but this is easily fixed with fatter/longer screws. The daggerboard can wear through the back of the case, but again this is easily fixed with epoxy.

Other than that just check for cosmetic damage, in particular damage caused by scraping trapeze hooks over the bottom.

A 12 year old, £1000 boat should still be structurally sound, just not neccessarily very pretty!

Yes, if it's on the bulkhead then you can get a spanner through to tighten the bolt or replace it when you need to

Awesome boat - just sold mine. Loved very minute of it especially when really honking.

Great value and there have been a bunch sold s/h in the last few weeks which should strengthen the grass roots of the class.

Time for a 600 resurgence - i'd have kept mine for the occasional windy day if it wasn't for insurance, dinghy park, 49er, kids toppers and oppies!

would u say 11 stone is too light for 1?

Posted By: Prince Buster
Date Posted: 11 Feb 06 at 2:19pm
Lol no!  I'm just over 8 stone and i've just got 1!  With wide wings and reefed sail you could easily handle it.  I still havn't managed to get mine sorted out but i had a go on one at my club last week and it was great fun!

Just thought i'd chip in, i LOVE my 600 too!!  Enfact i dont think ive ever met anyone who's had one and not enjoyed it!  Plus i think its a great step up boat for bigger/faster toys like the 49er and musto skiff.

Hi All,

A replacement sent of RS600 wings costs £200. They come pro gripped and with the control line rings. Sometimes we have some second hand ones but unfortunately we don't have any at the moment.

If you have any questions please get in contact.

Cheers

Aye to be sure!  It's actually balancing precariously on a double stacker laser trailer - that we used to use for oppies!!!

Having changed my 600 wings from wides to narrows this week I can confirm that it does require hammers and bits of wood, but is all good fun! Just got to try and work out how to re-string the damn thing now!

Ouch! I would so not want to hit my plastic boat with wodden blocks and hammers to get the racks on.

Having said that there was a bit of corrosion on the ally poles when I got the Blaze which had siezed them in place but a good bit of pressure washing soons loosened that off!

ripping a laser in half? why not do it in style? use 2 submarines then you can make sure it sinks as well.

Rick reckons it is, when I got my 6 he said it would make an excellent trainer for the MPS or indeed 700 if you're RS obsessed.  The rounded hull shape is actually a little trickier than the MPS- afterall the MPS has chines for stability and it's almost optional to not put the kite up...

Yep - having sailed both the MPS is easier as it's has chines; there are loads of ex-600 guys in the fleet so it's a good place to start. The kite actually makes things easire downhill i believe.

Rick.

PS: It's only an option not to use the kite if you are happy being a big jessie ...
