Hi,　

We are considering to buy a 10 years old “Tartan 4000” right now.　But one issue is really bothering us.　The door of the head is wider than the frame, so can’t close the door now.　Is this a serious problem for boat structure or not? 　Does anyone knows about this. Please advice us.　Thank you.

Could be due to distortion of the frame due to rig tension, mast compression or the yacht resting on her keel … suggest that you give serious consideration to getting a survey before parting with your cash

Hi,

just looked at the yacht builder webpage. Looks really nice, however, as recommended above the cost of a survey will be well worth it - bearing in mind some of the prices I've seen.

Just a quick thought - if you can take a tape measure with you, measure the door and door frame diagonals. That's a quick way of seeing if it's the door or frame (both diagonals should be the same, of course).

Yes, she is very beautiful and we love her very much. Your suggestion is an eye-opener to us. It’s the easiest way to check it. We are now looking for the surveyor, but the cost is very high, also they require of the agreement of the current owner. And moreover need the time a lot. Before surveyor, we’ll try your advice.

A quick scan of the net shows Tartan 4000s going for around 300,000 dollars. I couldn't imagine not getting a pre sale survey and would expect the owner to be expecting one. If he ,or she, is not co-operative....run away VERY quickly as there is something awful wrong with the boat.
Also, your insurance company will demand an up to date survey before covering. I suspect that you are not in the UK, but over here not only would the survey identify faults but the usual contract would have the owner repairing or discounting the price to remedy undisclosed faults

It is worrying, especially when you add the other question to this about diesel fumes in the living area.

I am a yacht surveyor, but being UK based I am probably not in a position to help, but I would suggest that it is unwise not to have a survey, especially as would appear from your posts, you may be comparatively inexperienced, also the cost of the survey as a %age of the purchase price is not very significant. If the vendor is genuine then they should not baulk at you requesting a survey. SAMS and NAMS have good coverage in the US, where I guess that the yacht is located.
