Is there anything in the rules that says the RO must abandon a race if the wind shifts excessively (say 180º) before the finish? I'm aware of rule 32.1.

14. Abandonment
14.1 Onthefirsthalfofthefirstleg,theracemanagementteammayabandonintheeventofa major, persistent, wind shift (more than 25 degrees). After that, the race management team will let the race continue if it is able to adjust to the changed conditions.

15. Adjusting The Course To A New Wind Speed Or Direction
15.1 Changeinwinddirection:
(a) With a persistent wind shift of 10° or less the course will not be changed unless necessary to adjust for current or to provide a square run.
(b) Between 10° and 15° consideration will be given to adjusting the course to the new wind provided that the race management team is confident that the shift is likely to persist.
(c) With a persistent wind shift of more than 15°, the race management team will attempt to change the course to the new wind.
(d) With a persistent wind shift of more than 45°, the race management team will consider its influence on the race. Under these circumstances, the race management team may either change the course or abandon the race.
(e) Frequent and violent oscillations: Under these circumstances the race management team may not be able to adjust the course sufficiently or quickly enough to maintain a race of the required standard. In this case the race may be abandoned.
(f) Changes in current or a difference in the angle of the current relative to the wind may justify variations from these guidelines.

62.1 (a) an improper action or omission of the race committee, protest committee, organizing authority or technical committee for the event, but not by a protest committee decision when the boat was a party to the hearing;

Obviously you would move the course if you could or just shorten the course. If the race was anything up to half way there would be reasonable consideration to abandon it. Anything after that I would deem as likely to come under redress as being un-fair. 62.1(a) (obviously its all situational) but the longer it runs the more vulnerable the RC becomes. I've been at an event where the race was abandoned at the finish and following redress they re-instated places of all boats that they had and the rest were given the last position +1

I've also been to events where they run 1 lap get a massive wind shift and then its follow the leader to the finish for another 2 laps. These venues I just vote with my feet and don't go back too. Never seen anyone successfully get redress because the wind shifted though.

Generally race officers seem more keen to start and finish races than to abandon them.  I see more starts aborted in sequence than I do races.   This is either as the line was always wrong or there has been a significant change in wind strength or direction.  The latter reason is a good reason for abandoning a race on open water too.  It should not matter particularly how long the race has been going forward.  Race officer should be collecting information from the other members of the on water race team eg mark layers to inform his decision.  Additionally to wind speed this could also include relative speed of wind and tide.  We don’t have discards in the sport to enable race officers to include lousy races in the series score!

I am a little confused, I totally understand the importance of the subject at nationals , large opens etc.

But are we really talking about doing this at a normal ordinary club race ? 😀

I think so

I only get to sail once a week on a Sunday and we have 3 races. I'm not going to be amused if my 3x 50 minute races are either following the leader or turn into 25 minutes because the wind is clocking round. If I end up wasting an hour of my time re-starting races then I'm still getting the enjoyment before the wind shifts

Not everyone will have the knowledge to run races to a high standard and I think we owe it to our clubs as the more experienced to keep those standards high. The members who don't want to take it too seriously won't take it seriously regardless of the standards, but those who wan't to won't ever get a chance if someone doesn't make the effort.

I have to say I have club raced for 30 years and in that time I have never heard a fellow sailor say a club race should have been abandoned because a of change of wind direction.

Tbh it probably bothers me less than most as I sailed on the river Avon in Warwick for the first ten years of my sailing life . No chance of ever changing the course to match the wind. Reaching starts were the norm and even down wind starts were known to happen LOL

On a small pond,the wind will move. Not sure we would ever get a race finished. Would like them to be right at the start, though.
