We had a long, long race at the weekend in the EYC Laser fleet. The winner got round in an hour and 45 minutes. Third and fourth place were seperated by 2 seconds. Yes 2 seconds after all that sailing. That is 0.03% difference. The sailors, who happen to be brothers, were not sure who got third because they finished some distance apart on the line. Can anyone beat that for a close finish?

I recall a pursuit race once where there were 8 boats running down the lake in column at the cut off point. Can't remember the results, but glad I was one of the 8, not the race officer!

The real freak close finishes are caused by weather. I recall a Championship race where the sea breeze came from behind a becalmed fleet on the last leg and the entire fleet finished within seconds. The results were a complete lottery.

The Sail GP final was decided by a 4 second margin...in F50s there wont be much in terms of distance.

In Wednesday night's race I finished in 50' 01", my corrected time was identical to one of the Ents at 48' 14" and four other boats were within a 16 second window on corrected time (all faster than me ).

At Frensham we have a 10 hour race, comprising crews sailing 50 minute stints in the same boat. Like Southport 24hr, changeovers are entertaining. A couple of years ago we had two Solo teams split for the win by a literally a couple of boat lengths. After 10 hours racing. Then another 2 laser teams split for 4th/5th by maybe 50 yards. They were pipped by a few seconds on corrected time by another lot.
