Are sails the 'printer ink' of the dinghy world?

No, because boats aren't cheap enough.

Yep, I agree with Mr Fuller. Yes, the SMOD manufacturers operate the same cheaper new object, more expensive spares as every other manufacturer of things, cars, bikes, guitars etc, but it isn't the blatant loss leader sale/mega price consumables you get with retail printers.

I ask because I came across a post to the effect that entrants to a certain class' 2021 Nationals would receive a code giving them a pretty substantial discount off a new sail. Certainly sufficient to justify entering even if actual attendance is uncertain.

Yeah I saw that post to do with Blaze Nationals Sam - I get your point on this. However, I saw it as more a way to try and get more of the older Mk1, Mk2 etc boats to come along to the nationals which is more of a specific issue for classes that decided to make step changes to their design or materials making older boats less competitive in my view

I would like to go to the Nationals this year (assuming they do happen) but only if I have bought a new sail by then so this offer, if genuine, would definitely sway my decision. Announcing it only in a Facebook reply (not even the original post) makes me nervous though...

Just out of interest Sam - do you need the new sail in order to enter (i.e. your old sail is no longer class compliant) or you need a new sail because your old one is shagged?! I assume it is the former so they are offering a discount so as to get as many old boats up to the new spec. If you look at it like this, it is a smart move as the builder wants the class to thrive and having all the old boats unable to race is not a smart move!

I have a fairly tired, class legal, North sail but am definitely in the market for a new one whether I enter the Nats or not. I probably wouldn't go to the nationals if I don't get a new sail though.

I also have an unused Sobstadt Blaze X sail but whey=ther that would be competitive or not I have no idea Tongue

Not sure how it works but you could register for the Nats, pay the small deposit...get a new sail on discount and then not show up due to needing to wash your hair, got a headache, not in the mood etc??

Dinghy sail prices have always been outrageous imv. It shouldn't be possible for a custom loft to manufacture cheaper locally than Sri Lanka/Chinese Lofts and probably they don't, it's just that the margin the SMODs operate is obscene.

Then again the volumes are low, but is that the chicken or the egg? If the sails were cheaper would we buy more?

When I first started this lark I could have landed duty paid a Laser sail from a far east loft that also made Enterprise and a few other boat sails I wasn't interested in, for 25 USD, when at the time cable was still @ £1 = $1.8.

I think some one of your friendly industry cartel put pressure on them because the offer was later withdrawn, but it illustrated just how badly this business was ripping y'all off and I've always resented it.

The thought hadn't escaped me but was immediately dismissed. If, OTOH, I entered and then discovered I would still have to pay full price (or a significantly lesser discount) on my new sail I would be seriously dischuffed which would certainly spoil my enjoyment somewhat, certainly of the event and possibly of the boat which would be a real tragedy. Even if I was to consider that option (which I'm not, if I enter I'll go and race as many races as I can) the cost of the entry is sufficiently less than the discount offered that it wouldn't matter*

Either way I would like to do the Nationals at least once** and I am totally invested in the boat so would not risk anything that dulled my enthusiasm for the Blaze.

Some 'official' confirmation would certainly have me putting the dates in my diary and feeling up the T5 camper.

* AFAIK there is no deposit option.

** My fitness levels are what hold me back these days, two day events are a little more than I'm comfortable with. I'm trying to improve and then my knees seize up and I'm back to square one Angry
