It seems from what I see on FB that the great Bob Fisher has passed away, or taken his last zephyr over the finish line as it was put. I did wonder where to post this, but since he had so much to did with dinghy development over the years it seemed this was the best section.

He was the main reason for me to buy Y&Y for years.

Looking for his foot appearing in shot in those Howard's Way sailing sequences

And being a dinghy sailor at the highest level back in the day.

Thank you Bob!

Sad indeed. David Henshall wrote a lovely article which was published just a few days ago about his life.
And yes, the first stop in Y&Y was always his column.

I always remember him having a healthy disrespect of the RYA, he was a great character, the like of which is missing from Dinghy World these days. He is already sadly missed.

RIP Bob and thanks for everything.

I have had read every edition bar one of Y&Y since July 1976.  In those non-internet days the best two pages were the Jack Knights and Bob Fisher columns with their very current and sometimes quite irreverent views on the sailing world.

We watched a programme on Tracy Edwards a few weeks ago and whilst his views on Maiden were mildly sexist at the time, he did come across as a bit of a dinosaur looking back on it now.  I'm sure it was all delivered with a twinkle of his eye even back then.

Do we have sailing characters like him any more?

Sail on (if only in our hearts), Bob

There are some super memories/tales/reminiscences of Bob on a Sailing Anarchy forum - I've lifted this quote which just sounds so like him:

Bob was a long standing family friend from my Lymo' days and erstwhile fierce competitor in Barracuda of Tarrant for several seasons, so I have just been reminiscing with my dad (same generation), who reminded me of a proposed clause in Bob's will - "A sum of £X to pay for a large window to be installed in the wall of the UK Met Office, so they can look outside and see what's going on."

The first-hand account of how Bob's Bolt came about is well worth reading - post #34 in the forum here:  http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?/topic/220418-rip-bob-fisher/&tab=comments#comment-7395502" rel="nofollow - http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?/topic/220418-rip-bob-fisher/&tab=comments#comment-7395502

I too recall reading the Bob Fisher column in Y&Y since the 70s. The other thing I recall is he got quite a lot of mainstream TV exposure during the 83 Americas Cup, which was one of the first times I remember seeing anything to do with sailing on TV. I wasn't aware of his connection to Howards Way (Barracuda of Tarrant) though. One of my memories of sailing back in those days was sailing my Laser or whatever at the local SC on a Sunday, then coming home and falling asleep watching Howards Way in the evening !
